chapter11 [ 6.5 ]

Works on a purely entertaining level. Cocky Ving Rhames and mild-mannered Wesley Snipes are pitted against each other in prison. You know who's going to get his come-uppance in the end, but along the way we get a superbly entertaining performance from Rhames and a fantastic bit part courtesy of-- who else? it IS a boxing movie, after all-- Peter Falk. There's no depth to be found anywhere, and Snipes is boring as the killer with a heart of gold, but the movie succeeds on some sort of instinct-driven, violence-as-entertainment level.

A lean, mean piece of genre filmmaking that would qualify as a guilty pleasure if it wasn't so well-made in parts. Unfortunately, Ving Rhames's strong screen presence and all the creative editing in the world can't save the movie from its clichéd script overly predictable finale.

It works for awhile on its own instinctual level, but I gradually lost interest in the characters, who were just shy of believability. Also, the boxing scenes were pretty lame. I thought after Rocky we wouldn't be hearing any more of those big fake punching noises.
