Salles gives us the human impetus behind the communist revolutionary's ideology. Displays genuine affection for indigenous peoples of South America. Perhaps it romanticizes them a bit, but given the marginal role such people play in the history of cinema, perhaps a bit of romanticization is in order. And we should also remember that this is a movie based on Che's writings, and thus it seems entirely appropriate to portray the people as he saw them.

Unenlightening attempt to understand how Che Guevara's long road trip through South America in the early 1950s helped transform him into a revolutionary. The craftsmanship is solid, as is the acting, but the film never gets into Che's head. A weak final act - in which the saintly Che visits a Peruvian leper colony - doesn't help, either.

I guess it was overrated mainly because of all the Che Guevara worship out there, 'cuz I went in thinking it could be a GREAT movie, like a really moving, inspirational one or, barring that, something rich in character and moments like "Y Tu Mama Tambien", but what I saw was a lot of stuff straight out of Screenwriting 101, and there was hardly any conflict whatsoever to make the movie very dynamic. The format was surprisingly perfunctory in the way they would continually meet one small group of people after another, maybe tend to one of their wounded, party with them, and then reflect wistfully about their progress. It was that schematic over and over, and then it just ends. I give it a pass, though, because all the natural scenery and climates throughout their journey are astonishingly beautiful. I would happily rewatch the movie just to savor its incredible look

Earnest hagiography of a road trip taken by the young Che Guevera, before he became the revoltionary who helped replace one repressive Cuban regime with another in the late 1950s. Rather obvious filmmaking, and the two leads are so charming you're never unaware of the director's unrestrained love for them.
