After toiling away at South Park and exclusively South Park for the last few years, Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided to stray a bit from the show and work on this Thunderbirds-inspired action film parody. As it turns out... they should stick to South Park. Not because this film is bad; it's absolutely hilarious. But it's so close to South Park in tone that it doesn't seem as fresh as it should. The film goes as far as outright stealing entire 3-minute joke segments (the montage sequence is taken word-for-word from the show) from the show and taking dialogue from the show. Perhaps it's the fact that the film was made over a relatively short amount of time and thus some padding had to be made; maybe it's just the South Park fan in me. In any case, this shouldn't stop anyone from seeing this movie because it'S a riot. Team America are a crack team of freedom fighters who take on terrorists worldwide. When one of their members is killed, they hire a Broadway actor named Gary to take his place and infiltrate the terrorists. Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin heads the Film Actors Guild in protest to the war. Team America is as profane, silly, juvenile, violent and crude as you'd expect; if anything, it's all this and more... and it's hilarious. Mass vomit scenes haven't been funny since 1983... but somehow the vomit scene in here works (okay, maybe it's the puppets). It's filled with hilarious songs, as is South Park; my personal favorite is the heartbreaking ballad ''Pearl Harbor Sucked and I Miss You''. Really, this film's only problem is that it recycles too many South Park stuff; Kim Jong Il isn't really very funny because he comes across as a poor cross between Cartman and the Asian guy who works at City Wok in South Park. Maybe this is just asking too much, but I'd expected the film to take a bit of a different direction. Even a slight deviation would be good. This is basically a South Park script that couldn't be filmed with the South Park characters so they made it with puppets. Speaking of which, the puppets and puppet scenery are terrific (although the actor puppets look nothing like the actual actors they're supposed to be). As filmmaking, Team America may not be much... but as comedy, it's solid gold.

Though it didn't have the initial laugh-out-loud effect that "South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut" had (due mostly to the tunes "Uncle Fucker" and "It's Easy, Mmmmkay"), Trey Parker and Matt Stone's latest effort is more consistently funny and doesn't burn out in the final 1/3 of the movie like their 1999 film. I love the speech about the dicks who fuck pussies and assholes, among other offensively brilliant lines and scenes that you must hear and see for yourself to truly appreciate.

south park was by far funnier and more outrageous.

You wanted to turn away from the screen. You laughed till you cried and then felt slightly guilty from doing so. This was definitely cutting edge... it just depends where that edge is. Well worth a watch if toilet humor is your thing.
