Most of the British gangster movies in the wake of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels have been either inane & flippant Tarantino wanna-bes, or grim exercises is boredom. Layer Cake is thankfully neither. It's complex plot continuously places the viewer in a situation where he must reassess (as the protagonist does) the balance of power. It's an interesting movie from scene to scene, even if the ending unsatisfactorily seems De Palma-ish.
