A slice-of-life film taken from Gorky's writings and set in 1880s Russia. Gorky lives with his extended family in poverty and there are many wacky incidents and goofy relatives. The most memorable relative being his grandfather, the head of the family but also a selfish and childish old man. He thrashes Gorky to within an inch of his life, and whines about not being respected for his former factory position. It is probably cosmic justice that ends up begging in the streets (though, pointedly, he's still an asshole even then).
