I don't know why I liked this movie so much, but I really did. Maybe it's the characters, most of whom are alternately insufferable and endearing. I like that Don Roos doesn't quite villify any of them, even the worst ones (like Maggie Gyllenhaal, or Jesse Bradford). They have their faults, and some of them are impossible to forgive, but off and on you can't help but sympathize with each of their stories and hope for a happy ending. Of the three primary plots, I'd say the one with Steve Coogan and Laura Dern about the sperm bank was the least successful, as it had the least weight - unlike the other two, not much really developed from it, and other than Coogan and Dern the characters and performances just weren't as enticing. As a whole, however, the movie attains an odd serendipity by the end that I find hard to describe. I loved the intertitles that explained little details here and there, even though I'm sure most people would consider them condescending and smug. And I loved watching the actors in their parts. Tom Arnold, Lisa Kudrow, Jesse Bradford, Bobby Cavanale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Ritter, Eric Jungmann, Coogan and Dern, and an uncredited cameo of "I wish there was more of him" hilarity by Jason Galecki - this is your standard indie dramedy cast, but they all create characters far more indelible than they usually do (especially Kudrow, who sidesteps not just her once typecast spazzy bimbo bit but also the icy bitch for which she was similarly typecast in the wake of Roos' "The Opposite of Sex"). I'm not doing the movie justice, but it was very good, much more so than I expected
