Well, I've kind of figured it out: I really, really like Jim Jarmusch's aesthetic. If I made movies, I would make movies like Jim Jarmusch. I find it difficult to believe that yo can dig some Jarmusch films and not others. While they're not all created equal, they're certainly similar enough intone that you get one, you get 'em all.
This one is no different: it's three deadpan vignettes set in Memphis. The first involves a young Japanese; she's into Elvis, he's more of a Carl Perkins guy. That's pretty much it. The second segment has an Italian woman (Nicoletta Braschi) waylaid for the day who meets a hysterical American woman who has just left her no-goodnik English boyfriend. The third has that same boyfriend (JOE MOTHERFUCKIN' STRUMMER) dragging his brother-in-law (Steve motherfuckin' Buscemi) on a drunken binge that goes awry.
It's the same kind of Jarmusch goodness, centered around hotel clerks (Cinque Lee and Screamin' Jay motherfuckin' Hawkins) and gravelly voiced radio DJ (Tom motherfuckin' Waits) that guide teh action. Suffice to say that this is a motherfuckin' cool movie. It drips coolness.

The contemplation of Elvis and his legacy makes for some interesting window dressing, but the real attractions here are the brilliant storytelling structure and the incredible deadpan humor.

Everything after the Japanese couple is just dull. That first vignette with them was strangely intoxicating, but there's a huge gulf in spontaneity and inspiration between that and the rest of the film, once they disappear
