Easily the best noir related film not made in the 1940s-50s. Jack Nicholson gives what may be his most iconic performance in a long line of them. By filtering the tropes of 40s noir through a 70s sensibility, Roman Polanski and screenwriter Robert Towne give us a film for the ages. Chinatown will easily make it on to any best of list I compile. No question.

This was a good noir film, I'm sure, for it's time, but in the grand scheme of film history this wasn't a "great" film. It was certainly a kick seeing a young Jack Nicholson taken on the role of a classic noir detective but the overall film didn't do very much for me.

Perhaps a second viewing would yield a greater depth that I just missed out on.

Love noir, but... not this one.

Powerful drama with some shocking turns. Dunaway in particular is excellent.

Probably the best movie to ever not be the best movie of its year.

Wow, look at those ratings, some of which are there only because this is supposedly 'a classic'. This is also supposed to be a landmark film and I can't say that I agree with that either seeing as movies like In the Heat of the Night, Dirty Harry, and The Godfather preceded this. It just wasn't all that entertaining. The conclusion was less then satisfying, and it took a long time to get there. After I saw Mulholland Falls, it only confirmed my opinion. That film might as well have been called a remake and it wasn't very good either. Sorry, but this reviewer is not on the Chinatown bandwagon.

I won't try to explain the plot of this movie, because that would be giving away a good deal of surprises. Suffice to say, "Chinatown" stars Jack Nicholson as a private eye. Nicholson is great, as usual. Other people in this movie are Faye Dunaway, John Huston, and, of course, Roman Polanski as "Man With Knife" as the credits say. Polanski also directs. The movie is confusing, but being that it's a mystery, that is to be expected. There are many plot twists and you never really know exactly what's going on, but that's not a bad thing.
