Nice French film about a turn-of-the-century family and events in their lives. Our protagonist here is Marcel. While still a youngster, he is taken by his father, a teacher, to classes in order to watch over him. He (to the suprise of his father) learns to read with all of the other children, and one day begins to read out loud with the rest of his children. Then we fast-forward seven years, when the family takes a summer vacation in the countryside. Events slow down, but the strength of the characters carry the film. Marcel is eager to explore the countryside, and meets another young boy who lives in the area. Together, they have all kinds of adventures, including secretly following his father and uncle into the woods on a hunt, where the film takes a turn toward real drama. Followed by the film My Mother's Castle.
