Absolutely amazing adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel of teenage alienation by Elia Kazan. James Dean stars as Cal, a lonely young man who lives in the shadow of his handsomer, smarter brother, Aron (Richard Davalos) and the mystery of his mother's identity. Dean might not have been a subtle actor, but he was a true creation, full of twitches and squints. The supporting cast is great (Burl Ives as the sherrif is great) but the script is what amkes this movie so great. I admit that it's an unsubtle adaptation of the Cain and Abel story, but it's done with so much subtlety and emotion by Kazan that it's a real classic. I haven't read the book, but I will be seeking it out.

Fine acting, especially Jo Van Fleet and James Dean mark this movie as a classic.

John Steinbeck's novel has been transformed into this overmelodramatic film that tends to overstay it's welcome just a little bit.

Classic abridgement of the Steinbeck novel, and the first starring role for the legendary James Dean. I think of it (perhaps in a pedestrian way) of a Cain v. Abel type of story, with Dean playing Cal Trask, the "bad" son, trying his hardest to win the approval of his stern father Raymond Massey, who plays an established California lettuce farmer. He once again attempts to do this by purchasing a good lettuce crop to replace a ruined one, borrowing the money to do so from a not-so-honorable madam named Kate, who turns out to be the two sons' mother, long since thought to be deceased. I realize this description doesn't do the film (nor the story) justice, but it really is one of the great ones from Elia Kazan. Everyone should see this one.
