Genial enough, but too generic to be truly good entertainment, "The Replacements" offers plenty of fun bits, but fails to gel them all into a cohesive, uproarious whole. Of course, it begs the obvious question: the great Gene Hackman is in this.... why?

This is the kind of movie you find left behind on the DVD rack on $.99 day, until a petty soul with the slightest bit of curousity chooses to take it home. But then that soul is no longer embarassed to be renting such a movie, for it was his fifth rental! It's free! Now he can boast that he had the power to choose any movie blindly without suffering the financial consequences and self-inflicted shame he would have suffered had he been forced to pay for it. Oh, Jon Favreau is quite funny for what he's given.

This is a surprisingly sweet and funny football movie. Yes, it is formulaic, and yes all the leads have done better work, but this movie works. I laughed out loud a few times and never felt cheated or manipulated. I do have a little soft spot for Keanu Reeves and I always love Gene Hackman's work regardless of the movie he is in, so maybe there is some bias on my part, but I still recommend this movie for what it is, a light, funny, romantic, sports movie, and nothing more.

Average football movie at best with Keanu Reeves as the down and out football player and Gene Hackman as the coach trying to bring Reeves to life. Occasionnally fun and predictable, this does not compare to Hackman's performance in Hoosiers or the great football movie RUDY.

I watched The Replacements on an airplane. That fact in itself made it a welcome break from the monotony of the engine noise. However, the film was a bit disappointing. It didn't live up to a Gene Hackman standard, and I'm frankly a bit surprised that he decided to appear in the film. I watched an E! "behind-the-scenes" special after, and it almost seemed like he was reading a script when he said that the role was different enough to be interesting. I was like, "Really?" It's the story of the players who play football while the regular NFL players are on strike, apparently based on actual events in the late 1980's. While it was fun to watch, it was utterly predictable and pedestrian. Good enough to balance out the bad, but bad enough to balance out the good.

Stereotype city. The fallen hero, the retired coach, the aggressive player, the goofy sidekick, the generic girl. It's too bad these parts are all played by actors capable of better (not sure about Keanu, though - he's had plenty of chances and foiled them all). There's not one memorable or entertaining moment in this entire movie. It's the underdog sports movie about 8 years out of style, lined with wimpy humor and useful only as a drinking game for those well-versed in these kinds of spiritless ripoffs
