"Men of Honor" is a good story that hinges on the performances of its two strong lead actors. Both Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding Jr. perform strongly, as can be expected, but the movie seems as typical and overdramatic as 'most any other "inspirational, based-on-a-true" story flick. Still fairly solid, despite all that.

Men of Honor is one film where two fantastic performances help it rise above a somewhat tried-and-true story. However, the story of Carl Brashear (the first black Master chief Navy diver and the first amputee Navy diver) is quite inspirational. Cuba Gooding Jr plays Brashear and reminds us he can act even in the face of crud like Snow Dogs and Daddy Day Camp. Robert De Niro brings depth to his portrayal of the racist diving instructor who eventually breaks past his prejudices and becomes Carl's mentor. Men Of Honor, while not a classic by any means, is one of the better inspirational underdog movies out there.

This is a true story about the first black Navy diver. The acting is great. How could it not be with DeNiro and Gooding? But the movie is an hour too long.

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert DeNiro are first rate in this adaptation of a true story about the first black navy diver. While the story may be somewhat predictable and offer nothing new, it is still an entertaining film that is quite inspirational.

It's fairly decent. My guess is that women like it better than men. Of course there is Robert Deniro and Cuba Gooding Jr. The film seems to last a tad too long. Please visit AMAZON.COM to see my book: MEAT by Mark Kilgore! Thanks!
