"Hearts In Atlantis" revs its engine, but sadly doesn't go anywhere. Anthony Hopkins is expectedly reliable as the polite but mysterious new neighbor, but the rest of the movie is all exposition and no action. "Hearts In Atlantis" takes its title from a Stephen King collection of novellas and short stories--- inexplicably, though, "Hearts In Atlantis" was actually the title of another short story in that book, the title referencing frequent card games in a college dorm. The story that "Hearts In Atlantis," the movie, comes from, is the first story in the collection, "Low Men In Yellow Coats." Not only does this not make sense, but "Hearts In Atlantis" isn't nearly as exciting as that original story. A pedestrian money-maker for King.

I wanted desperately for Hearts in Atlantis to be another Shawshank Redemption or Green Mile and perhaps it could have been, but unfortunately for me, it just never really took off. Mysterious but perfectly polite Anthony Hopkins moves in next door, fills the neighborhood children with all sorts of wonder and confidence, and then gets arrested and is taken away. I kept thinking to myself, "OK, the exposition is all set-- we know about all the characters, now where's the story?" Great performances all around, and I always like strong, gentle David Morse, but this film, for me, kind of fizzled.
