"Red Dragon" might be held in slightly higher regard if Michael Mann hadn't adapted the superb "Manhunter" from the same Thomas Harris novel in 1986, but not by much. This 2003 rendering of the material assembles a great cast - Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, Harvey Keitel, Emily Watson, Ray Fiennes, Phillip Seymour Hoffman - but the finish product is very run-of-the-mill - it's not particularly awful, but not up to the high standard of quality of the previous Hannibal Lecter movies. Translation: even "Hannibal" was better than this. Completists may want to give it a look, but everyone else would do much better to give "Manhunter" a go. Note to Anthony Hopkins: should another Hannibal Lecter picture be in your future, PLEASE don't play him like a Hannibal Lecter impersonator. You're getting way too campy for your own good.

Far better than Hannibal, this is what that movie should have been--a true integration with Silence of the Lambs, using the same characters and sytle. Unfortunately the score still suffers and really detracts from the overall mood (whereas the score in Silence is one of the most effective peices I've ever heard), thereby knocking this one down a notch or two. Solid, but not amazing.

A solid thriller. But not transcendant like Silence or Manhunter. Better than Hannibal or the truly horrendous Hannibal Rising. The main problem here is that Brett Ratner does not have the same talent for style or characterization that Jonathan Demme and Michael Mann have in spades or even the visual flair of Ridley Scott. Competent and decently crafted. But that's about it.

An artless adaptation of Thomas Harris's same-named novel directed with zero passion by Brett Ratner. Edward Norton sleepwalks through his role of FBI Will Graham (a character better played by CSI's William Petersen in Michael Mann's Manhunter) and the rest of the star-studded cast does not fare any better.

Personally I felt this was far better than the drab Manhunter. Hopkins is back to his best and the other members of the cast were almost spot on. Enjoyable and I would say better than Silence.

Not as good as Manhunter, but more faithful to the book. This is a run-of-the-mill thriller with an A-List cast and high production values.

Very disappointing. Not even in the same league as Silence of the Lambs or Hannibal. Some great actors and they weren't bad just blah. Doesn't even compare to 1986's Manhunter, which had some problems of it's own, but at least it was a bit original in its production. This was too slick for its own good.
