What the hell? An hour into this movie, i actually started praying. I wanted answers, or a resolution, or just an end to my suffering... something. Unfortunately, I got none of the above, and smokin' Lena Olin kept her clothes on, so "Darkness" was a loser all around. I really don't know why "Darkness" made it to theaters - there are oodles of direct-to-vid movies i'd rather catch, including the sequels to "Wild Things" and all the "Trois" movies. "Darkness" is also worse than every recent lame-ass PG-13 horror movie that made it marketable in the first place: "the Grudge" was scarier (never thought I'd say it), "the Ring 2" was more coherent (never thought I'd say it), and it's not quite as flagrantly bad as "Boogeyman," making it far less entertaining. The painful part is that, watching it, you can tell everybody thought they were making a good movie.

This is one of those movies that the plot is so stupid and complicated that throughout the whole movie you will be saying "what the f$%# is going on here!" You are watching the movie for an hour which explains the supernatural events inside the house that a family is living it. The problem is that the explaining of the plot is so bad that you don't know what is going on during the whole movie. The end of the movie is anti-climatic, the acting is horrible, and by far the worst movie I have seen in 2004.

An unfocused mess from start to finish. The editing is atrocious and the film's few final act frights will be overly familiar to anyone who has seen an Asian horror flick or two. Balaguero is a decent visual stylist, though, and with a coherent script might be capable of making a good movie. Darkness is not it, however. [102m cut]

This is going to be a short review because I didn’t take any notes and there really weren't any "best lines". I like Anna Paquin as Rogue and I wanted to see something else with her in it. She does a pretty good job in a film that is a cross between The Shining, The Haunting and The Grudge with a little touch of The Others thrown in for good measure.
Story- A family moves into a new house and the house is kind of haunted. That is an extremely simplified description. There are some twists and turns that I saw about 2 seconds before they were revealed, and a few really good ones that I didn't. I liked this film and think it is worth at least a rental or picking up a used copy.
Casting - The only name I recognized in the credits was Anna Paquin, but once you start watching the movie there are a few familiar faces. The bad guy from the first Tomb Raider plays her dad. The police inspector from Hannibal (The one who got hung and gutted) plays her grandfather.
A lot of throwback camera work is used in this movie. Things like hand-held and shaking the camera like an earthquake. Even though I don't care for the whole NYPD Blue style, (Damn them!) it works. In the special features the director said he wanted as many of the effects as possible to be done in camera. The only thing some people won't like is the ending. Now I'm not going to spoil the end for you but most movies can not pull off endings like this. You either like it or you don't.
Ok, a bit longer than intended. I enjoyed it, Judi enjoyed it. And it was definitely better than Boogeyman. Stupid movie there. Anyways I'd recommend it. Darkness that is, not Boogeyman.
