Shine is another film that I was excited to see when I first began it, and was desperate to like. I have played the piano since I was four years old. Even though the film is excellently-made, I just didn't get into it like I had hoped. The film did serve to make a household name out of At the time, Geoffrey Rush, however. He plays David Helfgott, a pianist with a history of mental problems. It's the somewhat sad story of his rise as a professional concert pianist, even attempting to perform Rachmaninoff's difficult Piano Concerto No. 3. Subsequently, though, he suffers a nervous breakdown and finds himself playing piano in local bars. He meets Gillian (Lynn Redgrave), falls in love, and the two struggle to regain what he had lost. Brilliant acting all around, but as I said, I just didn't connect.
