Nasty movie, so searing in its supposed satire that I could barely tell when to laugh and when to be horrified. To that end I was entertained and thought this was a risky venture on behalf of the writer/director Peter Berg (where has he gone?). It works well if you like any of the actors too, because you get to see them really chew the scenery, overacting like crazy. Christian Slater hasn't had this kind of leading role since, which is a shame since he's so talented. Daniel Stern and Jon Favreau have for the most part also disappeared (except for Jon's new movie "Made") but their descent into the dungeon of prematurely-ended careers goes with a bang here. And Jeremy Piven...no one can say enough praiseworthy things about this man. His energy is equaled by no one in Hollywood. Why can't, why won't, they tap this incredible talent and zeal? I read that he has a big part with his sort of-partner John Cusack in "Serendipity" this summer so hopefully that will help him get more, better parts. He's one of the best actors out there. So overall this is a movie that will at least capture your attention, but its blend of comedy and grotesque melodrama is weird. The poetic justice of the ending could just as easily make you laugh at Peter Berg's cleverness or wince at how painful and awful everything turns out

Once in a while, there comes a film that is so very bad that thinking about it makes you uncomfortable. Very Bad Things is one of those. The premise is good; the cast is good as well. Tell me, then, why is this movie so very bad? Jon Favreau is about to get married to huge bitch Cameron Diaz. He decides to have a bachelor party in Vegas with the boys (Christian Slater, Leland Orser, Jeremy Piven and Daniel Stern). All goes rather well until Piven impales a hooker on a rod and Slater kills a security guard with a wine bottle opener. His plan? They'll cut up the corpses and bury them in the desert. This works reasonably well until one of them can't take it anymore, blah blah blah blah and we don't care anymore. I love twisted movies, but this is not twisted. This is sick and pointless and annoying. All the characters are poorly acted and badly acted (except maybe for Diaz, who's always endearing, even when she's playing a bitch spawned from Satan... but not in the movie very much)... but most importantly: it's not funny. Not for a goddamn second. Like I said, I don't mind films that are mean-spirited; I embrace them... if they're funny or well made. This is just crap from start to finish, a barrel of utter shit sitting in the sun for 3 weeks.

Christian Slater was a good casting choice for this movie. He excels in roles that make him dominantly capable of getting out of bad situations (watch True Romance (1993), a much better movie, to see what I'm talking about).
I kind of liked the premise of the movie: Slater and a bunch of friends, including Jeremy Piven and Daniel Stern, throw a bachelor party for their friend (Jon Favreau) in a hotel room. Piven sleeps with, and (supposedly) accidently kills a prostitute in the room. Everyone freaks out. A security guard from the hotel comes to the room, finds the dead hooker, and Slater takes it upon himself to remove the witness, so to speak.
The problem with the movie is that it gets ridiculous after this point. The acting is good, but the writing is not. The script has the characters doing things that do not constitute a good comedy or a credible suspense story. I may have believed that Piven could hit his brother (Stern) with his car while attempting to ram Stern's van in a fit of rage, but I do not believe that Slater and his friends would be more upset at the possibility that Stern may have told his wife about the murders before he died than the fact that their friend is dead, especially right after the fact.
This is not a great movie, but it is better than most people have given it credit for.

several unsympathetic, one dimensional, annoying characters going on a pointless killing spree, and i'm supposed to be laughing when i'm really either disgusted, or bored, or frustrated .. simply, the film bugged .. however, i realize that this most likely falls into the category of films that i have a personal problem with, and others may very well enjoy ..
