another visually astounding and contemplative era film by kurosawa .. yes, i said another, but by no means do i intend to slight the film's subject matter .. perhaps i should say, yet another masterpiece from kurosawa, and leave it at that ..

An impressive production, particularly notable for its tragic climax, a handful of stunningly composed shots, and the backstory of Kurosawa's rough journey to get this made. I just have to admit, though, that it was a bit of task to sit through. The script is rather dry, and while there's plenty of narrative and thematic material to play with here, I don't think it needed so wide a berth to convey. Exorbitance has worked in Kurosawa's favor plenty of other times ("Seven Samurai", "Ran", etc.) but so has reasonable brevity ("Rashomon", "Sanjuro", "Throne of Blood"), and in this case I think he could have made a more effective picture in practically half the runtime.
Reminds me of Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" - I get what he was aiming for there, and his meticulous technical artistry is on proud display, but making it SO long and SO akin to watching a textbook in audio/visual form just renders the experience a lifeless one.

So many of Kurosawa's films are about coping with death, weather as an aged person who faces it or as those left alive. Kagemusha slides in nicely in Kurosawa's ouevre, prepping you for the glorious Ran.
