This so-called "adult" western certainly must have been an oddity during America's modern age of innocence (middle-aged sheriff Gary Cooper is forced to stand alone in his showdown with a evildoer when his townsmates abandon him), but the thing that struck me as most interesting was its use of real-time action. Call this the original 24.

one of those films that i would have liked to like even more .. a great story, of a marshal who has every excuse and reason to leave town, except for his own sense of moral obligation. much less action and glamour than most westerns, but a more introspective and universal theme as well ..

The western of all time. Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly are memorable.

An oldie but not necessarily a goodie.

Excellent, extremely complex "western" film. Interesting to see young Lloyd Bridges and Harry Morgan. It's also one of the first successful uses of "real time" in filmmaking, with all of the film's stories culminating at 12:00 noon. I sensed a great deal of anguish and sacrifice when Amy (Grace Kelly), a Quaker by birth who was opposed to killing in any way, took up a gun herself and defended the town. I didn't fully appreciate the film when I first saw it for a school assignment during my freshman year at BYU, but it's now on my Top 100 list.

That Gary Cooper is the man! This movie is an eye-opener when you compare the marshall to today's typical leaders. The character was so upstanding, but that word can hardly be used in today's society without some sort of cynicism.

Highly-regarded Western/drama features nothing more exciting-- or even really that interesting-- than Gary Cooper and his conflicted, but steely portrayal of a retired marshall in some nondescript small town in the old west. I'm still not entirely sure what forms the basis of "High Noon"'s expansive regard, but I will say that the film had me captivated in the last 30 minutes or so-- the famous reverse-crane shot of the desolate main drag, the quick-cut reactions of everyone in town once noon rolls around-- it builds to a slightly anti-climactic resolution, yes, but it's one of the most fascinating and artfully done build-ups I've ever seen. Then again, keep in mind that I'm no fan of westerns, so a slight genre bias may factor in to my (comparitively) low rating. Still: I enjoyed it to an extent, it features some stifling suspense near the end, and it's a nice, compact platter at a petite 85 minutes.

Pretty decent western with Gary Cooper as Will Kane, the retired marshall who postpones his honeymoon with his new wife, played by Grace Kelly (who is disturbingly younger than Cooper) to take on a gang of thugs that come to town to kill him. I liked the cinematography and the score, the acting was satisfactory, but the buildup was much more effective than the climax. At just over 80 minutes, though, the movie never gets a chance to drag, which is good.
