Brandon is overly kind. Some of the shaky camera work can't be simply forgiven, nor can some of the really unclear expressions from the actors which are only explained through the subtitles. This does make you think a little, and has a very high inspirational aim. I just don't see it as that good in the entire body of cinema.

i'm breaking with my normal rating system here, and awarding points simply because of its place in cinematic history. i really don't see how a silent, dramatic film could otherwise stand up to more contemporary films unless this is taken into account.
that said, it still stands up as an excellent film, its use of images and juxtaposition could still teach many filmmakers today about conveying a certain emotion or message.
if i were to rate it simply on its own merit, it'd probably still score a 7.5 or so .. and although it is considered (myself included) as one of the greatest films of all-time, i can't give it a 10. (though i'm sure i would've 40 or 50 years ago).
