in her first full role since luc besson's "the professional" five years ago, natalie portman doesn't disappoint. as the heart and soul of the storyline, having any less of a talent might have proven disastrous for this film. not to discredit wayne wang or susan sarandon, both whom deserve much credit .. but this was natalie's film.
the one thing i had a problem handling in the film was the much too obvious and incessant attempts at pulling the tear duct strings .. while not ineffective, it did take away from the impact of each scene ..

Parts of this film got to me, but on the whole it was pretty routine. Good performances from Susan Sarandon (Adele August) and Natalie Portman (Ann August) though. There were a couple of good actors that were somewhat wasted, Thora Birch and Bonnie Bedelia. Maybe most of their performance got left on the cutting room floor. There were also the beginings of a very sweet romance between Anne and Peter (a high school friend) but it sort of got lost at the end. Makes a good rental.

An up and coming Natalie Portman and the always good Susan Sarandon should make for a well acted chick flick right? WRONG! 'Let's drop everything and go to Hollywood' formula wears very thin. Natalie Portman is a cutie though.

In Anywhere But Here, Susan Sarandon plays an aging mother (who refuses to believe it) who dreams of moving to Beverly Hills. Natalie Portman plays her more (almost to a fault) realist daughter. The two make the move, rent an apartment they can't afford, and struggle to relate to one another. Sarandon dreams of her daughter becoming an actress, while she dreams for herself of landing a "trophy husband,:" so to speak. Neither ever happens in the film. To be honest, I found the film a bit irritating. I don't know if it was Sarandon's quixotic impetuousity, or if it was the stone-faced portrayal by Portman, but the mix just didn't go over that well for me. Still, I'd have to admit that the performances were honest and sincere. Not that bad, but definitely not that good.
