i think this was better than eXistenZ even though I have given them th same rating. I thought Michael Caine was fantastic and deserving of his Best Supporting Actor Oscar, except I would've picked Th Cruise. I thought ... something was missing from this movie. Some essential spark or inspiration. I like Th Tobe, and he was good here; there was something touching about th way he refused to perform abortions; he was convincing as a naive shut-in. But ... again, something missing. Nothing to make th character memorable. If you like to be haunted by movie characters, you'll probably be disappointed. Most intriguing is th surrogate father-son relationship 'tween Th Tobe and Th Caine. Their relationship is greater than th sum of its parts, even if th movie isn't. My favourite scene: when Homer (Th Tobe) returns triumphantly to th orphanage and is tackled by joyous children. Ah, it is good to be missed and good to come home to people who missed you.

I'm not a big fan of Irving, but this is a very good movie, if quite predictable. Children aren't really so cute and life isn't really so sweet, but this is a sort of fantasy we have here on the film. A good tear-jerker. Michael Caine rules.

I wasn't sure about this film (it got so many mixed reviews) but after it received 7 Oscar nominations I felt I needed to see it. It is a wonderful movie with lots of genuine emotion but never sappy or maudlin. It's the first time I've heard Michael Caine use an American accent and he pulled it off. The scenery was just beautiful and filmed it such a way as to almost become a character. But movies filmed in New England are almost always filmed that way and almost always filmed in the fall (can't imagine why). Touchy subjects (abortion and incest) are handled gently. In fact that word "gently" is appropiate for describing the whole film.

I really didn't expect much when I went to see this in the theater. This is a must see story of a boy's growing into adulthood that didn't win best picture because of the terrific film American Beauty. But this deserves it's own merit. American cinema at it's best, and truly captivating from beginning to end.

"Good night, You princes of Maine, you Kings of New England." There's just something about this film that I love, that I can't quite put my finger on. I think perhaps it's the growing up and finally being presented the opportunity to go somewhere else that's so attractive. Michael Caine shines along with Tobey Maguire. In my opinion, really a great film.

Scenic, touches on all the right emotions with clarity, and Tobey Maguire's awe-struck face (its in all his movies) is instantly charming. The movie is more in love with itself than we could ever be, though. A vehicle that the Miramax used to peddle its way closer to the "glory" of the Oscars. The incest/rape thing in the second half is so issue-of-the-week unnecessary that it sinks whatever qualities the movie had going for it up to that point
