A Steven Spielberg classic that seems a little dated since the time of it's release. Having said that, it's a landmark film about a haunted home and it's a must see for any sort of movie buff.

I remember going to a movie with my two older sisters and my older brother on a Saturday afternoon in 1982. There were two theaters at the mall, and the other movie was Author, Author with Al Pacino. My two sisters were going to that one, and I knew I didn't like scary movies (I was 7 at the time). I don't know if my brother just didn't want to go alone, or if my sisters thought Author, Author would be boring or racy, but I ended up going to Poltergeist against my will that day. I suppose one could say, if they saw me in the theater that day, that I didn't see the movie as much as I heard it and tried not to watch it, as I spent much of the movie sitting on the floor with my back against the seat-back in front of me. I ended up having nightmares for several weeks afterward.
Enough of memories, I suppose. What I did see of the film (and what I remember) was extremely scary and very visually impressive, with things flying around, graves popping up in the house's kitchen, and a whole house crumpling up and disappearing into a big hole at the end of the movie. I obviously couldn't recommend it for 7-year-olds, but given the chance, I might take a look at it again to vanquish my old nightmare foes.

This was excellent when it came out, and stands up to some tests of time. Some of the cutting edge effects were cool, and still are, like the meat coming to life, and the father picking the flesh off his face. For about 1/3 of the movie, JoBeth Williams appears in her underwear, which may emphasize the urgency of the situation and may be fun for the adolescent boys to giggle about but it just seems goofy. The caskets popping out like jack-in-the-boxes is probably the worst effect in the movie, but it's not all that bad.

An absolutely freaky, spooky, and original horror movie. I loved it. It gave me nightmares as a kid, and I couldn't even understand the plot. Seeing it as an adult, it is even scarier in a different way.
