Before I first saw this movie in December last year, I knew I liked Tim Allen and thought the movie would be funny, but I was unprepared for the superb special effects extravaganza! Tim Allen plays Jason Nesmith, the one time star of the cult classic Galaxy Quest, which was cancelled in the early 1980s. He and his former co-stars travel the convention circuit, but jelousy ensues as egos clash. Jason and his crew are recruited by a group of desperate aliens called Thermians who intercepted the television show's transmission and built their society based upon the show, believing the show was a collection of historical documents. Without reservation, Galaxy quest is truly a must see.

I found Galaxy Quest refreshingly funny, even though I'm not necessarily a big Star Trek fan. The story centers around the cast of a Trek-like TV series and their endless fan-club promotional tours and appearances, all of which seem to deify the cocky, unreliable "Captain" (Allen). When he is asked by real aliens to come and save their planet, he thinks it's another promotional gig and signs up the whole bunch. When he realizes what he's gotten them all into, it really starts getting interesting. Great show.

"Galaxy Quest" can't decide whether it's a satire of Star Trek and Trekkies or a tribute to them and, in the end, it doesn't do very well at either one. The whole thing has a sort of sitcom feel and Tim Allen doesn't do much to help that. This movie should have been extremely silly, but, for some reason, it's done relatively seriously with even some drama which is comepletely out of place in a movie like this. The subplot about the technician (played by Tony Shalhoub) is the only one that works. This movie should have been a lot funnier.

Ostensibly targeted an an elite minority (self-aware Trekkies), Galaxy Quest is the kind of movie you can only really love if you're intimately aware of what it's spoofing. I've never watched an episode of Star Trek in my life and while it has become an integral part of pop culture, I can't say I'm all that familiar with it. Of course it's possible to enjoy Galaxy Quest without being a Star Trek but it probably helps. Galaxy Quest was a big hit twenty years ago, but its cast (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub and Daryl Mitchell) is relegated to touring the convention circuit. The commander (Allen) is beamed up into space by aliens who have confounded transmissions of the show for historical documents; they want the team to help them fight their enemies. Despite the casting of the very unfunny Tim Allen, it's actually a fairly clever spoof of science fiction in general. It's got lots of little details that make the entire film (I love how Rickman's character hates his on-screen persona, yet keeps his makeup on at all times) and a game cast (who doesn't love Tony Shalhoub?), the highlight of which is a unrecognizable Enrico Colantoni (you know, that guy that wasn't George Segal or David Spade in Just Shoot Me) as the singsong-voiced Mathesar. You can tell it's been sanitized for a PG-13, Tim Allen pretty much blows no matter what and like all Hollywood comedies it has its share of unnecessary subplots, but who cares when it's this funny?

Interesting spoof of Star Trek - but ultimately that's all it really was. However they did come up with some interesting comedic bits. While Tim Allen was ok as the lead role, Tony Shalhoub and Alan Rickman stole the show with their respective renditions of the stoned engineer and frustrated actor.

I loved this movie. Great cast and great script, especially for those of us who know and love Star Trek and can laugh at ourselves and the whole phenomenon. I've never been a huge fan of Tim Allen's film work but I thought he was perfectly cast here. Alan Rickman's sardonic alien was wonderfully played. I'm anxious for the DVD release. I understand there will be a language track in Thermion (the movie's alien language). Very Clever!
