Classic Tim Burton film. Amazingly executed, using stop-motion animation. Really my only complaints with the film are its shortness (although understandable, given the method of production) and the somewhat glossy story. In it, Jack Skellington, King of Pumpkintown mathematically discovers the magic of Christmas and sets out to fill (a dopey, bumbling, and almost exactly triangular) Santa's shoes. A road of self-discovery-- sort of like The Grinch Who Stole Christmas crossed with Beetlejuice, it's one of my Christmas favorites.

Marvelous stop-motion holiday musical fantasy combining Christmas and Halloween (I still say it's a Halloween movie overall) and paying high respect to both. Lots of unforgettable songs, like "This is Halloween" and "What's This", and it sounds like they recruited the voice of Audrey II from "Little Shop of Horrors" to do the equally cackling and sinister Mr. Boogie. Likely to be Danny Elfman's finest achievement when all is said and done, and I'd say Tim Burton's, too, but technichally not, since he didn't direct. Nonetheless, if you're curious as to the essential artistry of both Burton and Elfman, no other movie captures both their styles nearly as well. Notable still for its stop-motion beauty; as if the meticulously decorated little sets weren't enchanting enough, this particular method of animation, which requires jerky movements of all the characters and contains a bizarre visual bridge between 2-dimensional cel frames and 3-dimensional film photography, is a fine touch, complementing Burton and Elfman's twisted imaginations

The Nightmare Before Christmas is Tim Burton's best film. Its very imaginatively designed, both its environments and characters are very different from anything I've seen (except for the Christmas stuff, but that was a bit strange too). Its characters have great and, dare I say, quirky personalities. Danny Elfman's music is, as always, brilliant, and since this is a musical, this is a great showcase for him. Now I get to revealing the strange fact that Tim Burton was neither the director or producer of this movie, and his only connection to it is that he wrote the story upon which this is based. But this is still clearly a Tim Burton movie.

I saw the previews in the mid-1990's, thought it looked like a movie I may enjoy, since I like spooky things. It ended up being a bit more kid-oriented than I expected, but it wasn't a deal-breaker. I would have to say: you have to be into this kind of kid-movie; otherwise, do not watch it! Ever wander if God really exists? Check out my book: MEAT by Mark Kilgore. The answer, and many other answers, lie within. On AMAZON.COM & available by request in bookstores.
