"My Cousin Vinnie" starts out with a guy accidently stealing a tuna fish can and then gets arrested. He confessed, thinking that he was confessing about stealing the tuna fish can, but the police thought he was confessing about a murder. That's the type of set-up I like in a movie: Unlikely, contrived, and silly (unless it's supposed to be a serious movie, of course). Well, anyway, they hire a lawyer named Vincent LaGuardia Gambini (great name, eh?), played by Joe Pesci. Pesci is great, as is Marisa Tomei (although she didn't give an oscar-worthy performance, but she got one anyway) And the judge is one of the best movie judges I've ever seen. The stuttering Public Defender is hilarious.

This is an extremely irritating movie, with all the anti-southern bigotry it can muster. There is also an even-handed anti-legal system and anti-northerner slant. The good parts of this movie are easily found in Pesci and Tomei, but there's not much else that is positive about it.

Difficult to swallow but with a better-than-average sense of comic timing, "My Cousin Vinny" is a fine comic showcase for Joe Pesci, who gives the film's most inspired performance as the title character-- at one point in the movie, he rebuts the prosecution's opening argument with "everything that guy said is bullsh*t... thank you." Marisa Tomei is memorable, if not Oscar-worthy (she earned that Oscar with "In the Bedroom," but I digress), and Judge Herman Munster is one of the best on-film judges ever. Overall, "My Cousin Vinny" is pretty goofy, but funny enough to not take itself seriously.

Joe Pesci is an amazingly versatile actor. He can scare the bejesus out of you with his portrayal of Tommy, the insanely temperamental, murderous mobster in Goodfellas, and then he can really make you laugh as the dense, goofy New York attorney Vinny, who is forced to do a pro-bono murder case in Alabama - a state who's culture he is quite unfamiliar with - to defend his nephew (Ralph Macchio) and his nephew's friend who are wrongly accused of murder.
Marisa Tomei (who won an Oscar for her role) holds her own very well against Pesci as his wife Lisa, who helps him with the case and has an amazing scene towards the end. And I must not forget to mention the late Fred Gwynne (from TV's The Munsters) as the impatient judge presiding over Vinny's case.
It does take a while to get to what proves to be the predictable outcome, but it's funny - there is a scene in which Macchio's friend meets Vinny alone in his jail cell, and mistakes Vinny for a way-too-friendly cellmate - this scene is so hilarious I can't stop laughing every time I see it - and that's what make it worth watching.
