I am still arguing with myself about this one. For me this is the antithesis of the typical action movie. The typical action movie should be chock full of stereotypes and bad dialog along with bad acting, but good action. In Romeo, the action was the worst thing about it. I never liked the "Crouching..." style of anti-gravity fight scenes, but the general choreography of all the fight scenes was just trash. The positives include Aaliyah and Isiah Washington, as Father-Daughter in a seemingly Black Mob family (as opposed to 'gangstas'). Also Jet Li is good, but the rest of the cast is just there. There was one really well done scene when Jet Li is walking out of a room, and there is a shot. You are not quite sure whether he gets shot in the back or not, and the director holds the tension for just long enough before letting us know.

Hyped as Jet Li's first US movie in a leading role, this movie actually teams up quite a cast that includes Delroy Lindo, Isaiah Washington, Aaliyah (very scrumptious), and Russell Wong (the one that makes the chicks wet). This is also the first film that Aaliyah has done. Judging from the box office reaction, Aaliyah and Jet Li both choose well for their debuts. The plot is incredibly predictable (of course it is! It's an action film!) and as a result no one really has to stretch their acting skills. Presumbably both play characters that they are familiar with. In fact Aaliyah has said so as much during her interviews, her character - Trish O'Day's personality is almost an exact replica of her own (as she put it - sexy and independent).

Jet Li was allowed to have full control on all the actions scenes - and the distinct choreography of Hong Kong martial arts films is in full swing here. In addition there's a definite "anime"/The Matrix feel to the fight scenes - very cool IMO. Brandon felt that the action scenes departed too much from reality, but I felt that in general the film earns it's right for the audience to suspend their disbelief. It's just too much fun watching the actors go all out! :) The director made an interesting choice in using CG to block out potential scenes of intense violence. Some people might find this bit of dazzle distracting, but I actually thought it quite innovative.

With such an obvious Shakespearian hint in the title, I'm glad that the writers did not take the obvious route for the two leads.

If you want something fun with no strings attached, you can't go wrong with the 113 minutes of eye candy here.

AND there's an awesome scene with these two Asian chicks rubbing up and stripping each other on a dance floor in the first 5 minutes of the film. Can't go wrong there!

One of Jet Li's better recent films as he attempts to cross over into American territory.
The mix of kung fu with hip hop gives it a wu tang flava.

There were some visually exciting moments but the obviously unrealistic fight moves blew it for me. These guys (Jet Li, Jackie Chan, etc...) are so amazing and quick without movie magic help that I was astounded that they boosted the fight scenes with very artificial moves. Aaliyah did a good job in her (I believe) first movie role, even though there were a couple of times I cringed at her reactions. I also felt the relationship between Jet Li and Aaliyah should have been heated up a bit. I'm not talking nudity or heavy sex, but a kiss would have been nice, this is supposed to be a take on Romeo and Juliet after all.

Tell me something. When did this wave of slow-mo martial arts moves become the way to go. MI2 did exactly the same thing. If you look at Steven Seagal's movies, the moves look real, and they're in REAL TIME. The moves in this movie are not. So, take way the bad action scenes from the movie and you're left with a cheesy plot about asians vs. blacks in SF and you're not left with much.

Jet Li has entered the US mainstream with his kung-fu and with Joel Silver producing...he could make it big. But action films like this drowned Steven Seagal's career! I thought the movie was good stepping stone for a Hollywood career. He need more dialogues! The final action scene with Russel Wong flopped! I will not compare this to Matrix action sequence since it pales in comparison.

Pretty good. Not much on fight movies but this was entertaining enough with tounge in cheek.

Not too bad. Mostly unrealistic karate action. A better bet is to see MEATBOOK.NET and read 'THE STORY'.
