Truncated, elliptical biography of Jim Morrison by Oliver Stone. The film follows Morrison from his early days as a UCLA film student, to his debut on Ed Sullivan, his days with the Warhol crowd, his overwight alcoholic days to his untimely demise at the age of 27. Stone never lets the viewer in on who Morrison really is; the film is more about what he did than who he was. The narrative is confused, skipping ahead recklessly and losing itself in copious amounts of musical montages and repetitive concert footage. What's more is that the movie eventually falls into familiar dramatic territory and the supporting characters are barely explored at all. For a film called The Doors, there's precious little time spent on the other members of the band. Considering that Morrison remains a mystery throught, this means that we never really get insight on these people. For all its flaws, though, there are scenes that work beautifully, an awesome soundtrack and a great performance by Kilmer. Also has Meg Ryan, Kyle Maclachlan, Michael Wincott, Michael Madsen, Kathleen Quinlan, Billy Idol, Kevin Dillon, Frank Whaley and Crispin Glover as Andy Warhol... but every single one doesn't live up to their potential. Probably Oliver Stone's worse movie that I've seen so far.

Trippy biopic focuses solely on Jim Morrison, which is fine for big fans of the Lizard King, but for the rest of us who just kind of dig the music, "The Doors" is pretty overbearing. Of course, the music is cool, but.... that's about all "The Doors" offers. The rest is just one string of scenes of Jim Morrison ticking off authority figures and prattling off drug-fueled rants. Kilmer accurately portrays Morrison - he's a dead ringer, really - but all this material with potential could have been a much shorter, much more tolerable film.

Interesting take on Jim Morrison's life by Oliver Stone. I enjoyed this very much but I think you'll need to be a fan of the music somewhat to be able to sit through it.

Enjoyable flick that portrays fairly accurately the story and continuing fame of the rock group the doors. It shows in a clever way the drug use that prevails heavily in the rock business.

Good movie that should have been called "All About Jim Morrison." Although resemblance isn't the most important part of the movie, Val Kilmer does a great job as The Lizard King, with "close-enough"s for everyone else. The soundtrack is one of the best things about this film. Doors fans should definitely see it. Also see it if you like Val Kilmer or Oliver Stone, but as usual, Stone's films are in-your-face and portray everything-- even somethings we'd rather not see.
