Gorgeous but thematically empty, The Legend of Bagger Vance is one of those comfortable warm and fuzzy films that never provokes a single thought or an ounce of excitement. The actors are beautiful (though Bruce McGill literally has a sneer painted on his upper lip) but the scenery upstages them. Ho-hum.

This is your plain old AVERAGE film in all aspects. It's an average sports movie about the average game of golf with average acting performances by Matt Damon, Will Smith, and Charlize Theron. Predictable and offering very little new ideas, it is exactly what I expected and I'm sure why I caved in to watch it.

Oh, how I love a good Robert Redford film. I was excited to see The Legend of Bagger Vance since I heard it was in production. I also enjoyed the cast-- both A-list and the relatively unknown. Plus, it's a film about golf, which I love to play. The complaint that I've heard most is that it's a bit slow, which is somewhat true, but I think we can attribute that more to the storytelling style of Redford and the setting of the screenplay more than to the intentional drawing out of the film. Favorite quotes: "Golf is a game that's played, not won," and "Three lousy shots and one brilliant shot can still make par." If you like golf or Redford's films, it's a must-see.

Despite reeking of that earthy backwoods aroma Robert Redford coats all his films with, this one really isn't all that bad.

I give it a 7.0 on the holistic scale, but at least a 9.0 on the "can I take a date to this" scale.

Bagger Vance is pretty predictable, but, even knowing the end doesn't really hurt it much. Yeah, it's no monumental epic, but there's room in this world for feel-good fluff, and this is just that filler.

Sports movies. Not a good idea. Blah. Interesting enough to watch 1 time. Check out the book: MEAT by Mark Kilgore on amazon.com!
