Only Quentin Tarantino could take such a conventional idea and turn it into such a brilliant, original movie.
The plot of the movie revolves around a botched jewelry heist that results in many bloody deaths to the robbers, civilians, and some cops. The job is put together by Joe (Lawrence Tierney), and Eddie (Christopher Penn), Joe's son. Joe assembles a cast of 6 strangers who work (or have worked) for him, gives them aliases consisting of only Mr., followed by a different color (which results in one of the funniest scenes in the movie).
Tierney and Penn, along with Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen and Harvey Keitel, as the robbers, give such hilariously captivating performances, and Tarantino does such compelling storytelling - the movie starts (after a short scene in a diner) near the end of the story, then backtracks several times, either to show us a character study of one of the robbers or to provide useful plot information - it doesn't matter that the movie employs the overused idea of a failed robbery. It is the best movie about a failed robbery I've ever seen. The scene with Madsen and the cop is one you'll remember for many years.

Overrated movie with an enormous following. How many times can you use the word FUCK in a movie? Only Glengarry Glenross uses it more. I wonder if Harvey Keitel can play any other roles?

Disappointed. I thought this was supposed to be good/great. I don't recommend this to you. I instead recommend that you browse my 1st book: MEAT by Mark Kilgore, based on an actual 'divine contact'. On amazon.com, and bookstores by request (there is no obligation to buy. They will be glad to order 1 in so that you have an opportunity to see what I'm talking about). See the front, back, foreword, and you'll be hooked!!!

Many movies ripped off this 1992 film, and yet, seeing it, I was exhilarated by the sheer energy of this film. It's been out for ten years and yet I felt like I was walking out of the Sundance screening. A great cast (made up mostly of familiar faces from independent cinema) brings this violent, hyperkinetic riff on heist films to life. Violent, funny, thrilling and even touching: everything a heist film szhould be.
