R. Lee Ermey is the reason this movie is so good. The former real-life DI plays a hilariously mean one here. The problem is that he's only in the first half of the movie. The second half fails in comparison. It's still very good though.

Almost like two separate stories: the first part covers the
boot camp training of a bunch of people, and the second part
covers them going off to war. The first part is great, the
second very skippable.

My sentiments are exactly those of everyone else....the first half was exceptional, the second half was not. As a military training film, the begininning of the film probably stands as the best of it's kind. That in itself says something because I hate all Stanley Kubrick films except for this one. The second half which deals with battle scenes is poorly done and there far better war films out there. Overall, a 7.0!

Sometimes Stanley Kubrick loses the plot.Sometimes he doesnt have one. Full Metal jacket is an example of the latter. As a war film FMJ is powerful in parts but these parts lack consistency and cohesion. The "bootcamp" segment of the film is absolutely brilliant. The performance of the drill sergeant is unbelievable with lines such as "Im going to rip out your eyes and skull fuck you" being highlights. The fact that this guy is an actual drill sergeant is also an interesting sideline. From here Kubrick seems to be void of anything interesting to say. Modine and co head off to kill the yellow man and find out that war is pretty shitty. Not that you would know from the cinematography which makes the whole thing look, well, rather nice.I doubt IndoChina had this much backlighting.

I want to do a split rating. I would give the first 1/3 a 7.5, and the remainder a 5.0. The sniper scene was massive on the big screen, though. www.outcrybookreview.com/meat.htm
