Though it may be, technically, a "classic," I can't bring myself to enjoy "Jaws" one bit. The boring, tired scare tactics are part of a long list of turn-offs in a wildly overrated film. The 3.0 rating is simply awarded to "Jaws" for its influence and its status as a benchmark in horror cinema, but really, Hitchcock's "The Birds," goofy as it was, used the whole "homicidal wildlife as plot device" thing to much greater effect. Overall, a film marked by widespread acclaim, but one undeserving of its prestige.

I'd rather die in any other way than get eaten by a shark. What's amazing about this movie is that you don't even see the shark for the first hour, yet you fear it.

I first saw this years ago on cable and this movie scared the crap out of me!!!Man this movie freaked me out so bad!!!I can't to this day go in the ocean without thinking about Jaws!!!My heart raced,I had nightmares, and it just totally freaked me out!!!!!A terrific and very terrifying and suspenseful classic that will scare you senseless and make you glad that you are not swimming in the ocean or at the beach!!!!

Jaws definitely earns its classic status. The special effects aren't on the level of Bruckheimer ones. But they contribute to the scariness of the film. Unlike many of the blockbusters that followed, Spielberg allows room for characterization and dialogue. You still can't go wrong with Jaws. Avoid the sequels however.

If you want to recall the 70's flicks, this one is definitly up there. It is the mainstream 70's all the way.

It is a timeless classic that never looses its edge after all these years. I highly recommend it to flick buffs everywhere: this flick is for you.

intense and suspenseful film... the theme music does wonders to add to the action...

The movie that scared me away from water so bad I didn't want to go to the bathroom.

Found it thrilling in my youth until I found out the 'Great White' was just a piece of plastic.

I will never go to an ocean beach again without thinking about this film and hearing that musical score signaling the attack of the killer whale.

Oprah Winfrey has an astounding power to MAKE an author by featuring them on her show. The tandem of Peter Benchley and Stephen Spielberg showed an equally astounding power to BREAK an entire species of animal.

And while Spielberg was obviously bowing to Moby Dick in parts of this film, he was also undeniably leaning forwards to Arachnophobia.

Still, I watch Jaws every damn time I catch it on late-night cable.

So long, shark.

Show me why this film deserves to be a classic and I'll show you my three buttocks. I really don't understand the reason why this film is so beloved and holds classic status -- the plot's not particularly special, the music is just annoying rather than suspenseful, and the acting is laughable. ALL of the people that helped make this film have done much better. Dreyfuss in Speilberg's "Close Encounters," Roy Scheider in "The French Connection," and Speilberg himself in "Schindler's List" and "Close Encounters."

I say you go rent "The Conversation," "Chinatown," or "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and call me in the morning. If you still think "Jaws" is a classic, well, I can't stop you, but I highly disagree.

One of the greatest films of all time. Enough said, because we've all seen it!

This is as close to a perfect movie as you'll likely see. Great acting, terrifying scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat. I saw this when I was 5 and had nightmares for years. The first scenes where the girl is eaten in the water is a hallmark moment.

VERY cool Spielberg adventure about a beach that's terrorized by a giant shark. Shaw, Scheider, and Dreyfuss all do excellent work in this nail-biter. Jaws is also the film that scares my father out of his skin to this day (particularly the part where the dismembered head floats out of the hole in the ship). The story itself is simple-- a huge shark is reported on a local beach, but the tourism trade is reluctant to publicize it, since it would mean the death of the economy of the small town. Join together undersea expert Dreyfuss, shark hunter Shaw, and police chief Scheider, and it's a struggle to find and kill the beast until the end. Highly recommendable.

What animal is scarier than a great white shark? What actor has done the cliched grizzled sea captain role better than Robert Shaw? And what "killer _____" movie has ever included a character-developing touch as beloved and remembered as that scene where the 3 of them drunkenly sing "show me the way to go home"? Behold Spielberg the entertainer and craftsman. If only there were more like him

One of the best movies i've ever seen!
I've seen Jaws enough times that I know every line in the movie. It's strange. the first time I saw it, the beach scene with Chrissie was all dark. But when I saw the 25th Anniversary Version, It kinda spoiled it because everything was light. Anyway, it is a absolute must-see.
I give it 10 out of a possible 10 Stars.

Great performances right across the broad. One of the most sucessful films in history.

Jaws is one of those few movies that is scary, fun, and, oddly enough, a great movie. It is incredibly scary, even though you rarely actually see the shark until the end of the movie. This movie has what I call the "Spielberg Touch", which I have come up with to explain the fact that almost all Spielberg films are amazingly entertaining, even those that shouldn't be. And to add to all that, John Williams' musical scores is probably the most effective (and deceptively simple) movie theme in cinematic history. And, to end this review, a quote: We're gonna need a bigger boat.

Jaws is incredible, especially for its day. I still am impressed by the mechanical shark, although I understand that it was not working properly 95% of the time. It is just great! The 'head' scene scared me so bad when I was a kid, both of the first 2 times I watched it. Also, once I was watching it with my girlfriend: during the dock-fishing scene, I, at the perfect moment, grabbed her from behind, and she jumped out of her pants!
MEATBOOK.NET is the site for my book, which is the result of an actual visit from God.

A_Ratliff  [ 3.5 ]    [ add to preferred ]    [ email this review to a friend ]

One of the great mysteries of filmdom to me will always be "Just why IS 'Jaws' so darn popular?" After years of hearing just how great "Jaws" was, I watched the film for the first time about five years ago, and since then I've found it unbearable to sit through. It offers no thrills, no memorable characters, no especially memorable lines or scenes. Hey, usually, I regard the classics as high as anyone, but "Jaws" just doesn't do it for me. I give it a 3.5, though, just for its technical merit and historical importance.
