I saw this movie shortly after I saw "The Birds" (which I didn't like) and was not expecting a very good movie. Boy, was I wrong. This movie is actually scary and it has quite a few surprises that you wouldn't expect. Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates is excellent, although I didn't like the other actors very much. Janet Leigh is a typical Hitchcock blonde and the rest of the cast make Al Gore seem lively. The ending psychological explanation was not a good idea either. But, despite these flaws, Psycho is a great, and scary, movie and is worth seeing.

Hitchcock is so good, I can't even throw enough superlatives at him to feel I have done his legacy justice. Anthony Perkins has just the right look in his eyes and developed nervous tics and gestures perfectly.

With 1960's "Psycho," Alfred Hitchcock broke the mold of his previous features and made a true Horror Movie. Whereas previous works like "Rear Window," "Vertigo," and "Strangers on a Train" were nervy, masterfully directed suspense movies--- thus earning Hitch the enduring nickname 'Master of Suspense--- "Psycho" crossed that line, and became one of cinema's most enduring shockers, not to mention one of its most fascinating psychological terror films. When a comely petty thief is killed at any other motel in any other movie, a run-of-the-mill whodunit is born. But when Janet Leigh was knifed to death in the shower of her room in the Bates Motel by a mysterious dress-clad figure--- WITHIN THE FIRST 45 MINUTES!!!--- America took notice. That shower murder broke new ground for onscreen violence--- despite the fact that you never saw any actual knife-to-flesh contant--- and the film itself shattered all sorts of taboos, weaving a gleefully, blackly comedic tapestry tackling gender roles, sexuality, violence, and Oedipal themes. Oh, and Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates? One of the greatest, most delightfully hammy screen performances ever. Which doesn't hurt the movie a lick.

This will always be masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. I try to picture what it was like in 1960, when this came out. The shit Hitchcock pulled was unprecendented at that time. To kill off the big lead actress a third of a way through the movie? And then getting us to root for the man trying to sink a car with her dead body in it?
I've read that this movie got some flack for the scene in which the doctor explains what has happened to Norman. Supposedly, even Hitchcock himself regretted the scene. I didn't see anything wrong with it. Omission of it may have made the final shot of Norman thinking to himself a bit freakier, but I didn't think it ruined the ending.

I don't get it -- why are people calling "Psycho" a classic and then only giving it a rating of '4'? This film is a masterpiece. A rating of '4' implies mediocrity.

It's classic.
Anthony Perkins' legendary performance as mother-obsessed Norman Bates is every bit it's hyped up to be. The use of music and camera angles is perfect in setting up harrowing suspense and shocking horror. Nobody will forget the shower scene, it's impossible to forget. The staircase murder is equally frightening.
Forget "Psycho"? Ha. RIP Alfred Hitchcock -- we could use more like you.

Very aged Hitchcock film that has film critic everywhere trying to convince everyone that this is a Top 100 film of all time. Well, I just don't see it. It's slow and predictable and so I give it a 6 only for its originality.

Psycho has to be placed right up there with North by Northwest and Rear Window as one of the greatest Hitchcock films. A young woman at work is given the task of depositing $40,000 in a local bank. On the way to the bank, she decides to buy a new car and skip town. Unluckily, a major rainstorm stops her in her tracks and so she stops at the spooky Bates Motel. And... the rest is history. Everyone should see this classic film.
