Planet of the Apes uses an original idea that could have resulted in a very silly movie, and instead succeeds in creating an intelligent, provocative masterpiece. The writing and directing were superb, and the acting was pretty good most of the time, with flashes of brilliance every now and then. I cannot believe Maurice Evans wasn't nominated for best supporting actor, as I was very impressed with his performance as Dr. Zaius. There is one significant problem with this movie; a logic problem. Taylor was obviously a very intelligent man, and yet he never seemed to wonder why the language of the apes was English. This kind of bothered me through the entire first time I watched the movie, because I figured that it either meant that the movie makers compromised on logic for easier and more practical cinema, or that I had figured out something I wasn't supposed to yet. I didn't mind knowing the mystery, but I did mind the implausibility that Taylor couldn't figure it out until he saw the Statue of Liberty. With all of that being said, I have never seen a movie that did not have a significant flaw, and as far as flaws go, Planet of the Apes was very short on them, and very long on intelligence and excitement. If you haven't seen this movie yet, you have been missing out.

Involving, extremely interesting sci-fi allegory. Alot like an inverted "Inherit the Wind," it has much to say about the aged "Science v. Religion" argument concerning the origins and evolutions of man. At the same time, Planet of the Apes is quite witty, causing me to laugh out loud several times. For example, toward the end, Taylor (Heston) is about to leave and tells the doctor that befriended him that he'd like to kiss her. She says, "All right, but you're so damned ugly." Or, when Taylor is shaving, Cornelius says, "Somehow, it makes you look less intelligent." The final scene is pretty famous (I won't spoil it for you...) but you should really see it. I don't know if I would have rated it G (some tense scenes, a few pretty strong swears for the day, and some bums) but I really, really enjoyed the film.

Not bad. I liked the humans, being all wild and all. I would say I recommend it only if you like sci-fi stuff like this. please see MEATBOOK.NET for my latest book; I think you'll like it!

Like most films with a mythical ending, Planet of the Apes does not quite live up to its reputation. The ending (while undeniably clever) has been part of pop culture for so long and with such tenacity that it's impossible to never have encountered it. Planet of the Apes is not one of those movies you can conveniently file away the ending to while watching, either; throughout the entire film, the twist looms. Too bad, because it's actually not half-bad. A group of astronauts from Earth (led by Charlton Heston) crash-land on a planet where man and ape have reversed roles. Heston is captured and studied by the apes who believe he's one of the mute humans due to an injury. Doctor Zira (Kim Hunter) soon realizes that there's more to this human than the others believes and helps him ''escape''. There's not much subtlety to the film's messages and symbolism but it's cleverly crafted; it doesn't take very long before the film beats in the message that humans are scum but it remains interesting to to find out where the movie goes with it.
