I heard that this movie was all hot and steamy so I went ahead and picked it up at a video store a few years back. Now I know that European film is a bit more artsy and old-school than American, but I think Kubrick tried to hard to capture the Euro-style here.
The sex scenes are freaky and definitely different. I personally got no erotic feelings from this film. Most of the girls were flat-chested and the whole idea of having sex with masks on fell flat on its face to me. I never thought Nicole Kidman was hot at all, so having here 'doing it' did nothing for me whatsoever.
Then you have the girlie man leprechaun himself, Tommy Cruise. What a wuss. Man I hate this guy, always have and always will. His smug smirk makes me sick, and he just looks like a dick. I was expecting a gay scene between him and another guy just to confirm my suspicions of him all along.
All in all this movie is a mess. I could never figure out what direction it was trying to go, and that DAMN SONG.
Not for me.

firstly, while the two and a half hour running time is fine and none too long, i felt we could have done without a small handful of scenes. and i think that had it been without, would have scored at least another point on my rating.

secondly, like "2001: a space odyssey", kubrick was able to completely transport me into the film .. something that doesn't all that often. and like the aforementioned film, the brain was working overtime as i alternately pondered, reflected, analyzed, questioned the film. and again, like "2001", after the film was over, it continued to roll through my head for at least another two hours (which i consider an excellent thing) ..

just a few other random thoughts :

no, it's in no way pornographic in nature;
yes, the digital masking was noticeable and did bug me;
yes, the style is over-the-top, but it's undeniably kubrick and i loved it;
no, i wish he hadn't tried to explain certain things;
no, it will not appeal to a mainstream audience;
no, it didn't live up to my expectation;
yes, it is a very good film.

I've been scouring the net for reviews to see if I missed something in the film. After going through all the various reviews and critiques of the film I don't think I did.

So I've condensed my review into a few thoughts.

Nice tits. Nice sets. Interesting performances. But what was all the fuss about? I mean, what makes brandon keep thinking and thinking hours after the film?

If someone can point out the depth in this film, please do so cuz otherwise I must be missing something...

Hits harder with each viewing. This might very well be Kubrick's strongest film. Also very important as a link between the tradition of jewish/psychoalnalytic art from the early 20th century's Vienna (Schnizler's Traumnovelle...) and the urban "NY" -milieu. Plus it's the best Christmas movie I've ever seen.

I have to admit it took me a little time to realize how much I liked this movie. But it kept haunting me and I couldn't stop thinking about it. From the unforgettable musical soundtrack to the seductive sensuality of Kidman, Kubrick slowly developed Cruises jealous obsession about his wife. His fall into a night of debauchery is frightening. And he brings us along on this journey into a world of masked men who swear not to tell by threat of death what they do in the middle of the night.

The only reason that this movie doesn't get a 10 is because of the inane addition of the cloaked figures that have been computer generated to block couples having sex during the orgy scenes. Apparently Americans can't handle watching sex scenes but the rest of the world can. The movie was quintessential Stanley Kubrick. It moved along in a dream-like state. Nothing seemed exactly real. The depersonalization of life (sex) was very effective and disturbing, right down to the final line of the movie. This is a movie that will stay with you for a while, which is a good thing. Too few movies can make that claim.

I say bravo for the photograph director

Stanley, Stanley, Stanley. First of all, this was hardly erotic. I actually thought it was quite tame. Secondly, why it is fashionable to like this director? A Clockwork Orange sucked, 2001 sucked and everything else Kubrick ever did sucked too. Why would anyone want to see Nicole Kidman in this type of movie? Why does anyone care about Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman together?
Get me outta here!

Mediocre movie with strong sexual tension throughout. It wasn't enough though and the flick drags.

O.K., so everyone has a libido! We get it! Eyes Wide Shut was the proclaimed "final masterpiece" of director/writer Stanley Kubrick, but in my opinion, it didn't have a whole lot of what made Kubrick great. The story seemed to rely on plot and character a whole lot more than say, Kubrick's famous cinematography (such as in A Clockwork Orange or 2001). This in itself is not really a bad thing. Just an observation. I think for most, the movie will play like a hybrid of The Game and The Firm, with generous amounts of 9½ Weeks thrown in for mass appeal. The rating that I believe the film earned is based on its watchability. Although it's long, it keeps you involved. The film is not, in my opinion, a "masterpiece," but it's quite a story.

This movie may be Kubrick's most hypnotic. Even Kidman's drunken speech as she dances with the Hungarian lothario seems like the slow-motion running of a nightmare. The only flaw I can find in this movie is the abrupt ending...but, then again, don't dreams end abruptly (when the alarm clock rings). I've read MANY negative reviews (The New Yorker, New York Observer, Village Voice) and I'm not sure any of these critics could justify their dismissal. Kubrick is a story-teller who happens to use film as his medium. He uses film as though it is literature. Throughout his stories, he provides metaphor after metaphor for the viewer to absorb and ponder. Absolutely nothing in his films is there by chance. (The placing of the pot in the band-aid tin as decadence hidden beneath social veneer, for example.) He is a director who cherishes the question as opposed to the answer. "Eyes Wide Shut" is more interesting as a revelation of the way complex social architecture leads to theatrical (ritual) perversity than as a updated "Fidelio." The orgy is supposed to seem choreographed while Kidman's scenes with her sailor are intensely erotic. "Eyes Wide Shut" is an excellent film and, when people dismiss the movie offhand, I get the feeling they are dismissing the hype in an effort to seem more sensitive to commericialism. By doing so, they tramble on a work of art...a welcome change from the money-driven, career-driven banquet mainstream Hollywood typically offers us.

I thought I would hate it, and my girlfriend like it. Other way around, thankfully! www.outcrybookreview.com/meat.htm

First of all, I'm dutch. That could mean two things: 1. I'm more used to european films 2. My english is very, very poor. Concerning the first, yes, I'm very fond of european films, though I watch more american ones. Eyes wide shut is an exellent example of a collision between those two. It breathes the european atmosphere even though it is very 'american' in style. Kubrick shows his talents in two-and-a-half-hour rollercoaster ride, taking us out of reality, into the lust-based human psyche. It is strange to see that a movie like this can have so many paralells with Kyubrick's previous 2001, also abandoning all reality in the end. 'Eyes' is a fantastic film, respecting everything film should be.
