The thing I like about this movie is that the teens all take themselves so seriously, which is really the way you feel when you are a teen. From an adult perspective, their worries are very petty and stupid, but in their world it's literally life and death.

I didn't understand what the big deal about James Dean was until I saw Rebel Without a Cause. (I hadn't seen East of Eden or Giant either....) Now, however, I think Dean did an absolutely excellent job as a young man looking for direction in a world where authority just doesn't care. The "You're tearing me apart!" scene, to me, is completely gut-wrenching. Great performances all around, with the chicken-race scene being endlessly imitated (but never equaled). Every parent should watch Rebel Without a Cause with their kids.
