After a rocky, cliched beginning, Frequency takes flight once contact with the past is made. The film kind of jerks you around in the manipulation of your emotions by putting father, son, and mother all at the brink of death at one time or another. Nevertheless, the film boldly went for increasingly dire situations as it progressed, instead of lapsing into cruise control. (This could easily have been a lazy drama about a boy and his long-lost dad, but instead becomes a thriller.) The story worked quite well until it abandons its intellect for a short series of action sequences that culminate in a not entirely believable finale. A sappy coda doesn't help much either. Still, Frequency is decent, diverting entertainment.

Very interesting and entertaining film. You've got to pay very close attention as time-travel movies can be confusing. But there were no major holes or paradoxes that I could see (if you find some I would love to know), which can be quite common in these kinds of movies. There were some very moving scenes and some highly charged action scenes. A good way to spend a couple of hours.

This is not one of Dennis Quaid's best films, but it is entertaining. It revolves around the theme of temporal paradoxes. Quaid plays a firefighter who has a short wave radio as a hobby. Many years later, his grown son, a cop, is listening to the radio and makes contact with his father who is 40 years in the past.
OK, the story line is predictable, but none the less is well written.

Clever, creative, well-made film. Frequency was more active and suspenseful than I thought it would be. Also escaped the usual plot holes and factual errors that are so prevalent with time-twisting films such as this. I enjoyed the acting, the special effects, and the script, which explored some interesting ideas about the possible consequences of changing one's past. Probably not for young children (there were lots of kids under ten in the theater with us) for some violence and crime scene shots, but all in all a great story, somewhat reminiscent of Back to the Future and L.A. Confidential all rolled up into one film. Introducing... the newest member of my Top 100: Frequency.

The physics that provide the inspiration for this film are fascinating. Unfortunately, the movie itself is typical Hollywood style string pulling and the sappy ending is unbearable. If you're making a science fiction movie, you are obliged to keep the science real. While String Theory dictates that the radio time conversation is indeed plausible, it also dictates that once the past has been changed the entire future will be effected. It is unlikely that John's problems in the present would be limited to his mother's murder. In fact, it is far more believable that the very nature of our social structure would have been warped. (If you step on a butterfly in the past, the future may look more like "The Terminator.") This movie doesn't seem to care about philosophy and sacrifices an oppurtunity to ask interesting questions in favor of predictable shinola.

As mentioned - gets off to a rocky start, but really takes off, becoming a compulsively watchable, supremely entertaining thriller - at that, a very refreshing thriller, extremely entertaining without pandering to the under-fifteen set. The dramatic elements are distracting, but as a suspense film, "Frequency" is a fine entry.

EDIT: When you're on a site for as long as many of us have been involved with this one, you're bound to find holes in some stuff you used to like. I was a teenager when "Frequency" came out; that was before I realized that Jim Caviezel and Dennis Quaid are two of the most insanely boring actors on the planet.

i really liked the premise, but where the heck did the serial killer plot line come from? it just felt like it went like this :

pitch - "i have a gread idea where a boy is able to talk with his dead father .. "

producer - "sounds good. but you know what would make it even better? put a serial killer in there .. i've always wanted to make a serial killer movie .. "

I think most users will concede that the previews sucked. However after reading a few positive reviews, I thought this movie might have some potential.

That and "Fantasia 2000" had sold out on the IMAX screen. Man it's May already! How the heck did it sell out?

Ok so maybe I didn't really _want_ to go see this movie but I came out of the theater with a positive impression of the film. It had a distinct visual style of its own that I enjoyed.

I thought this was a great film until the last 15 minutes which just sucked some big hollywood cheeseball ass.

Just the same, its a good movie for a summer evening.
