in all fairness the movie did do a decent job of communicating the gist of the plot and the special effects were appropriately well done. the book has been a long time favourite however, and my disappointment was well expected.

Two Formulatic of a movie, basically knowing whats going to happen by the last 30 mins.. The acting was exceptional, but the storyline didn't move my emotions like I thought it should..

It seemed to follow the main plot and themes of the book pretty well, and how the machine and journey actually took place was really interesting to see, especially since the made the machine seem a little bit more exciting. But I think they could have done more in the script department especially since they had Carl Sagan's brilliant novel to work with. And if you were disappointed by the ending, read the book...its sooo much better.

I really enjoyed this movie the first time I saw it. However, as I watch it again, I can't help but be turned off by the chessiness (if that's a word). Things didn't just happen on their own. So many plot contrivances were required. This movie did not make me think much about space travel, and even less about religion.
Is it possible to like the characters, but not like the actors?

It's certainly been a while since I've seen a decent sci-fi flick and this didn't help any. The plot was too contrived and the film moved along at a snail's pace. I wonder just how much was taken from the late great Carl Sagan.
