This movie assumes we're all stupid. We're supposed to buy into a preposterous plot which says that we have the technology to catch up with a meteor so that a few astronauts can sacrifice their lives to save us all, but we have no technology to fire anything at it from Earth. Yeah, here's a believable one.

A huge asteroid is on a collision course with Earth! A top notch crew of highly trained astronauts armed with nukes are sent to deal with the large mountain of rock and ice before it hits. No, this isn’t about the special effects extravaganza Armageddon, but about a movie of real substance - Deep Impact.
Deep Impact is not about asteroids, bombs and spaceships. It is not about dazzling special effects, although this movie does have some excellent effects. This movie is about human nature. It’s about how we as human beings deal with life and death. Morgan Freeman plays the President, who agonizes over giving the news that “Life will not go on for many.” Maximilian Schell and Tea Leoni play estranged father and daughter seeking for peace as the final day approaches, and Robert Duvall, the aging shuttle astronaut, shows us that the aged have years of wisdom and experience to offer us.
In my opinion, the critics underrated this movie. This film rises above all the hype and special effects that Armageddon had to offer. Without question, this movie has left a deeper impact on me!

Although Deep Impact gets sillier and sillier the more you think about it, upon first viewing, it's quite harrowing. Scientists alert the President of the United States that a huge comet is on a collision course with the Earth, and so they begin construction of a huge underground shelter, which inhabitants are chosen in lottery fashion. Plans also begin for assembling a team of astronauts to try and destroy the comet before it reaches earth. The astronauts try their best, but only succeed in breaking off a chunk of the comet, so they are left with one choice: let the smaller chunk hit the ocean, and ram the larger chunk head-on to try and dismantle it. Although it's emotionally pretty manipulative, it's a clever idea with some good effects. Worth a look, and in my opinion, quite superior to the similar Armageddon.

I agree that this one is better than Armageddon, but only slightly so. The differences between the two are big enough to make them enjoyable separately. Through the first half, I liked this one less because there was no single character that stood out above the others, but by the end I saw that they were trying to show many heroes making the difficult, self-sacrificial, right choices.

i'll preface my comment with saying that i'm a sucker for the topic of armageddon. and although for every contrived event and gratuitous situation, my mind was racing off onto other tangents and possibilities, it didn't prevent me from thoroughly enjoying myself during the film.

Sporting an earlier release date than it's sister summer film "Armageddon" this film had its share of hollywood stars but a much better storyline than the Bruce Willis helmed asteroid flick. The storyline follows a more realistic plot and show possible preparations the US government would make to ensure that "our way of life continues." Morgan Freeman kicks ass as the president.
