Refreshingly cynical (for a while, anyway) romantic comedy; in fact, it more or less set the path for every freaking Julia Roberts/Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romantic comedy since. What sets it apart is a witty, intelligent script from Nora Ephron (who, unsurprisingly, went on to direct a lot of these offspring), spirited performances from the two leads… and an almost complete lack of cutesy, cloying romantic behavior. Harry met Sally in 1977, when both of them were in college and carpooled back home to New York. Over the years they meet again and become friends, despite Harry’s theory that men and women can’t be friends because one always wants to boink the other. Filled with caustic one-liners and a (sometimes overly) perceptive view of romance, it’s the perfect antidote to sugar-sweet romantic comedy while remaining a perfectly charming film in itself… that is, until it throws everything it stands for down the drain and ends with a happy ending. Too bad.

I love Rob Reiner's flicks - you can just pop them in and watch it all over again.

Funny movie with many truths about men and women.

I'm a sucker for this type of film

Great performances from Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Carrie Fischer, and Bruno Kirby. Nora Ephron wrote masterful (and quotable) dialogue for each of the characters. It's got razor wit, obscure subtlety, and emotive moments between Ryan and Crystal. I never get tired of it.

Classic romance movie

An 80's classic...as everybody knows the resturant scene which is now part of cinema history.

This is my favorite romantic comedy of all time. Meg Ryan and Billy Cristol play people who know each other over a 12 year period. First they hate each other. Then they become friends. Then they fall in love. One of the funniest scenes I have ever viewed shows Meg Ryan trying to prove to Cristol that women do and can have fake orgasms. In the middle of a restaurant with diners agape she proves him wrong. And director Rob Reiner's mother says to the waiter "I"ll have what she has." One of the funniest one liners in movie history.

Yeah yeah, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. This was pretty good but it wasn't everything that it is cracked up to be is it?

There is one scene of this movie, in the restaurant that all people that have seen When Harry Met Sally... think of when this film is mentioned. I read one reviewer's comments that this movie is nothing more than a stupid man's Annie Hall but I don't think it's quite that simple, as there's different issues at work here. I don't think either is funnier (but I lean toward Annie Hall...) because this film has some classic scenes, especially the interludes with the married senior citizens. Married couples or those thinking about getting married should rent this and see it, as it's a great story, with some rough edges, with a happy ending (Ain't love grand?). Worth seeing.
