Sexy French Star Emmanuelle Béart gave the film that extra sultry push for me. But hey - Tom Cruise did a good job too.
And let's face it, we all thought the plot sucked. But the beginning of the movie was great and unexpected - who would have thought of having a Mission Impossible movie without the Mission Impossible team? Of course for those of you old enough to have watched Robert Redford in "Flight of the Condor" the plot is a bit too rehashed to feel right.
But hey, does Robert Redford get to mess with Emmanuelle Beart on the bed? Nope! He has to do a love scene with Faye Dunaway - who by that time was just looking a bit too faded.

THAT THEME SONG!!! That has to be one of the best theme songs there is to a movie (there are MANY good ones.) This is one of the best action movies I have ever seen. The action is non-stop and it keeps you guessing right to the end. Bearable to watch again and again...and again and again. The master of disguise and unbelievable hacking and computer gadgets (not too fake) makes this movie more original than others. Originality does not make this movie great, however. The wonderful acting and casting that has been put into this movie, as well as the set and the atmosphere has turned it into a full, complete, awesome action film.

How could a Tom Cruise movie be bad? The movie is escape adventure that brings back the nostaligia of the old TV series to me. I sure miss good tv. And that's where this movie belongs..on a tv series with the old characters back where they belong including Barbara Bain and Martain Landau.

I remember feeling at the time that this was a waste of time. Action movies like this have thrown out any concept of realism and the plot is so simple, stupid and predictable that anybody over the age of 6 will get absolutely nothing out of this movie. It reminded a lot of True Lies, both of which are trying to be a James Bond type movie and do not compare. Tom Cruise as an action hero? NOT!

I have to say the special effects here are worth noting. Howver this movie got too much credit, as the story is nothing special and if your a fan of Tom Cruise you will acknowledge he's done better work.

Excellent film. Some have complained that it often takes a couple of viewings to really get it, which is just fine with me. The pity is, I first saw this at a drive-in theater, and didn't have any idea what was going on. Then I saw it on video and thought, "That was pretty cool, but I didn't really understand all the nuances..." Then I saw it a third time and was like, "VERY cool." As I said in my review of Mission: Impossible 2, the two different directors basically determined the differences in the two films. I feel that the first one is a bit deeper/smarter/better, but my wife thinks the second one is more active/more exciting/better. I suppose it will be an ongoing debate. I guess I'm just saying to give the first one a chance and don't dislike it or get discouraged because the story isn't easy to understand on a first viewing.
RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT!

Hunt...Ethan Hunt. This remake of the classic TV show is better than any Bond, which are amazing, don't get me wrong. Gadgetry, suspense, and a wicked plot give this all the goods for one of my top films ever. I love the mix of action and mental confusion. Definately worth the time.

I have no idea about how well it compares to the series, I was born too late. This is an excellent action movie, but the excessively twisted spy plot makes it less enjoyable the first time. The second time, you know what you are looking for, so you can grasp it a little more easily.

This time-waster of a summer blockbuster is quite a chore to sit through. The "Mission: Impossible" movies have yet to find their actual niche; somewhere in the space between brainless and too smart. The realm of moderation seems to be lost on the directors of the "Mission: Impossible" films - Brian De Palma's 1996 take on the tv series is an overthought, confusing mess of a film, while John Woo's "Mission: Impossible 2" is far more entertaining and enjoyable, but lacks substance while engaging in boatloads of stylistic excess. The twisty, off-putting script isn't the only problem "Mission: Impossible" suffers from; it also features an uncharacteristically lazy performance from Tom Cruise, who doesn't even try to muster up a little charisma.
