The characters suck, even if that was Tim Burton's intention. If he had carried out his twisted vision all the way, he wouldn't have let all the boring good guy characters prevail at the end according to convention. Great effects at least

"Mars Attacks" is an odd movie in that it would have to be very silly to be funny, and it is very silly, but it's not funny. Sure, it has some funny bits, but as a whole it's just odd. The all-star cast (including Jack Nicholson, Glen Close, Martin Short, Danny DeVito, and Pierce Brosnan) tries it's best, but it's not enough to lift this movie above just an odd novelty. Although the movie was directed by Tim Burton, it lacks his trademark dark, eccentric feel. Generally, "Mars Attacks" is an oddly flat spoof.

When I first saw this movie in 1996, I hated it. I was a kid, and I thought it was one of the worst movies I'd ever seen. I saw it again now, a slightly older kid... and I still think it sucks, although now I understand WHY it sucks. Based on a series of trading cards, Mars Attacks features Jack Nicholson as the President of the United States who gets wind of an upcoming visit to Earth by the Martians; they come in peace, but due to a misunderstanding, they instead decide to wipe out the human race. It's meant as a sort of homage/parody of the Mars-invaders subgenre of the 50's, and visually, it pulls this off. As far as laughs or originality goes, well, better luck next time. The film obviously relies on its gargantuan cast to run free with the material, but it soon becomes a tired game of Kill-the-Celeb. Still, when you put Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Martin Short, Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Pierce Brosnan, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger, Tom Jones (the one and only), Jim Brown, Lukas Haas, Natalie Portman, Pam Grier, Lisa Marie, Sylvia Sidney, Jack Black, Joe Don Baker and Paul Winfield in one movie, you're bound to have at least a couple of moments. These are too few and far between to ever make the movie more than that: an endless series of cameos and bad jokes that could not have been funny to anyone except to a writer who, tellingly, only did a small film since.

A ridiculously goofy movie with unfunny actors like Martin Short, Pierce Brosnan, Danny Devito, Michael J Fox, etc.
This movie made crap like Battlefield Earth look like Oscar-winning material.
Hell it even has the bitch that brought us that unforgivable HBO series 'Sex In the City,' Sarah Jessica Parker.
I think I'll go jump into a pit of snakes and rats and rabid penguins after this brain cell-killing experience.

Mars Attacks is one movie that has limited rewatchability calue. First time I saw it I found it quite funny. Second time, mildly amusing. Third time, increasingly stupid. Mars Attacks is one movie that can't stand up because Tim Burton can't disguise the fact that his movie has a one-joke premise.

exactly why i saw this three times in the theater directly after it came out .. i'm not sure .. but each time a new group of friends wanted to see it, i seemed to remember thinking it was better than it really was .. it had potential, but i the ending was a huge cop-out .. hmm, and i hope natalie portman gets some better roles in the future ..
