Dustin Hoffman is such a great actor, he even lets you forget who he is. He totally gets into character. Cruise doesn't really need to act, it seems like he is just being himself. Great lines, great script.

"Rain Man" may well be one of the most compulsively watchable films ever made. The fine ensemble responsible for it--- director Barry Levinson, writer Ron Bass, and lead actors Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, most notably--- take a story that could have been wrought with syrupy melodrama and turn it into one of few films that could genuinely be called "heartwarming" without translating into "sickening." Dustin Hoffman's distant autistic genius and Tom Cruise's greedy, selfish scrooge prove brilliant counterpoints to each other; despite the disability of Hoffman's character, we sense a palpable, personal relationship between the two, brought about by the unavoidable chemistry of its two lead actors. This won a few deserved Oscars--- Hoffman, Levinson, and the film itself took home the night's most coveted awards--- but unlike most Oscar-baiters, it is full of heart and warmth, and one of the most genuine mainstream pictures ever made.

Probably both Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise's best performances in this captivating drama about two brothers one of which is autistic. Excellent film if you haven't seen it.

One of two favorite Dustin Hoffman movies along with Sleepers. A very well done movie about a guy who at first is reluctant to get to know his brother, who's an autistic savant. However they take a road trip together and they develop a quick bond that only brothers could. The on screen chemistry between Hoffman and Tom Cruise is outstanding, for sure. This is one of those movies where u walk out the theater, perhaps wishing the movie could continue. excellent film
