A flawed, but hip and catchy film that will delight the family viewer and the rock n' roll fan alike. The guys in the band are played to a T, and each one is given actual depth--save for the dimwitted bass player, simply referred to as The Bass Player. Of course, the film is a bit overacted at times, and the song becomes nerve-grating quickly. But, overall, "That Thing You Do!" is definitely a worthwhile watch--if just to watch Tom Hanks' slick, one-off performance or Steve Zahn's antics.

It was a very likable movie, but it seemed to be missing something that would bring it up a notch. I would even say that the cast was great, and the idea for the movie was poised to produce something great as well, but it all fell just a little shy.

Quite charming and endearing little movie by Tom Hanks. A hometown music group makes it big with a few songs, and are discovered by a record label which jets them to the top of the charts and instant popularity. With that popularity, though, comes relationship problems for the lead singer and his soft-spoken girlfriend (I swear... Liv Tyler looks like she's going to cry all the time). Also a problem when Tom Hanks tries to get the kids to do what they've signed a contract to do (but no longer want to...). All's well that ends well, however. Fun to watch, I assume, for baby boomers that grew up in that era and heard music like that. Pretty cool.

Snappy song, maybe played a dozen or 2 times too often. Amiable, smiling cast except for that moderately evil lead singer. Tom Hanks is just as friendly a director/writer as he is an actor/Hollywood icon
