The best Batman movie up until Chris Nolan swooped in and, you know, did Batman some real justice. Still, in its distinctly 80s way, "Batman" holds up, particularly Nicholson's goofball, go-for-broke performance. It strikes the balance between darkness and camp that any Batman movie - at least, any Batman movie that's not looking to function as a semi-realistic crime drama as well - needs.

One of my favorites. This was one of the first DVD's i ever bought. This is how the Caped Crusader is supposed to be, dark, quiet, and brooding. Good choice for a first villian, although I'll say what everyone says about this movie, it focused more on the joker than batman. Don't get me wrong, I love Jack, but the movie is titled BATMAN. But anyway, batman before the dreadful days of robin and batgirl. Kim Basinger, great as the female lead, a little naive at first, but finally realized what the hell was going on after a while. Michael Keaton was a great batman, although he didn't really bring any intimidation to the role, but yet portrayed the quiet, brooding side perfectly. Tim Burton did an amazing job with Batman, the whole film was so dark and in the shadows, great great job.

i remember this as being the first intensely huge victim of the over-hype marketing machine. everyone wearing batman logos on shirts, hats, and whatnot .. all before the film was ever released. i bought into the hype and was sorely disappointed.

Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Basinger star in the original Tim Burton directed vision of Gotham city. As befitting the dark knight the film was darkly filmed with a surreal feel - I mean it is hard to give any sense of reality to a person who dresses up in tights to go fight crime. While performing handsomely at the box office the studioes evidently were not all that happy with his effort.

Keaton was a surprisingly good Batman, Nicholson was a pretty good joker, and the other characters were well done. I wish there was a more convincing bad guy to actually fight Batman though. The big black guy at the end just didn't cut it, mostly because we didn't see anything about him earlier in the film. Overall, this is a very good movie.

I was an avid comic book reader as a child. But this movie was a disappointment. It had little connection to the comic I couldn't wait to read. Nicholson was fine but Michael Keaton was really miscast.

I will always remember my reaction to finding out that Michael Keaton was going to be Batman, "You've got to be joking!?" But I was sure proved wrong. What a Batman he was. Smart, sexy, funny, and Jack Nicholson wasn't half bad either as the Joker. Another must-mention is the set design. Amazing, and set a new standard. Tim Burton really brought a new look to movies. Definitely the best of the bunch.

This movie was all hype, no product. Jack Nicholson was annoying as hell and so was the entire film. I remember this movie well because it's the last film where I walked out of theater. To think they made 3 more sequels/remakes astonishes me. As a huge fan of the cartoon, this was extremely disapponting and it is one of the 10 worst films I've ever seen.

"Batman" is the best of the Batman movies, mainly because of Tim Burton. Because of Burton, the movie is darker than the later non-Burton ones, and therefore less ridiculous. Also, the sets and the entire Gotham City are pure Burton, and are great looking. On the bad side, almost none of the characters have any personality to speak of. The exception to this role is The Joker, played by Jack Nicholson and, I hate to say this, he goes too far over the top. Usually I am a staunch defender of Nicholson when people say that he overacts, I happen to think that he is one of the Great Actors, but this time he really is going to far. And do you really need to use makeup to make Nicholson's smile even bigger?
