So remarkably brilliant that it's almost supernatural. Conceptually brilliant in making Conrad's original novel timelier, shifting the setting from the Congo in the early 1900s to the heart of the Vietnam War. Brilliant in execution, scenes of remarkable beauty woven seamlessly, and unsettlingly, with more disturbing, rattling sights. Acted brilliantly, Brando particularly, because for all the talk of his off-screen antics, the fact remains that his performance is one of the most terrifying and memorable in all of film-- and he's on camera for less than 15 minutes total. "Apocalypse Now" is, quite simply, the greatest war film ever made; or, rather, the greatest film to set itself in a war, because it's as about war as "Psycho" is about the importance of fine cutlery. War is a catalyst for madness in "Apocalypse Now," a vehicle that drives home the point. Fantastic and haunting. One of few films of which I can honestly say I'd give it higher than a 10.0 if I could.

Oh, and a word to the wise: the original "Apocalypse Now" should be seen on first viewing. "Apocalypse Now Redux" has a fantastic transfer and a few interesting curiosities-- and should doubtlessly be seen by any fan of the original film-- but adds a lot more fat that serves to somewhat dilute the punch.

Good version of the Joseph Conrad novel, but my favorite Vietnam movie is Full Metal Jacket

This film includes some of the most amazing performances I've ever ever seen. Some of which I will truly never understand, but can only appreciate. You almost have the feeling that it is so strange that it must be true.

Coppola successfully depicts how war fuels man's insanity.

I’ve heard many people talk about “Apocalypse Now”. About how great, stupid, brilliant, crazy, inaccurate, philosophical, creepy, evolutionary, cynical, painful, enlightening they think it is. It irritates me that I rarely here anyone talk about the acting! Sheen, Brando and Duvall are all incredible in this film and Hopper does an excellent job with the small part he was given. As with many great films a ton of people misunderstood “Apocalypse Now” and never gave themselves the opportunity to comprehend the pure brilliance and vision that Coppola and others have blessed the world with. This is a rare case of a film being better than the book it is based on and while Apocalypse Now shifts from time to time on my movie list it will never escape it’s destiny of being a classic if it is not one already.

A runaway American officer becomes a Cambodian despot in the midst of the brutal war. An American soldier is sent to assassinate him. Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall star. This is a difficult and dark movie.

War, madness and evil on 47 different levels.

I cannot believe the ratings that this film gets nor the reputation that it holds.

I knew that I had seen this at least once before but I rented it again just to give myself a refresher. Let me get this straight. A Vietnam movie about a soldier sent to kill a colonel who loves surfing? And this received all the acclaim because.....?

Sorry, I missed the boat on this one and I can certainly think of a half dozen far superior Vietnam movies, let alone war films.

In 1 word....TERRIBLE!

One of the most overrated war movies ever, bar none. I hate Marlon Brando to start with, and its just too damn slow and tedious. I dont get all the critical acclaim this movie received. poor, very poor.

Francis Ford Coppola said of this film, "Apocalypse Now is not about Vietnam, Apocalypse Now is Vietnam." While I'm not old enough to remember anything about the war, I can't imagine this film being an accurate portrait of what the experience was like. Don't misunderstand… I don't necessarily think that film should try for realism above all, but responding to Coppola's statement, I'd have to disagree. The story, the acting, and the filmmaking were all superb. Coppola's one of my favorites. However, and I realize that this is the ultimate of subjectivity, but the film just didn't reach me like I wish it had. It tells the story of Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), already on the edge of insanity, being given an assignment to travel up the Mekong river to find and attempt to discipline Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), rumored to have bunkered himself and his zealous followers in the Cambodian jungle, and set himself up as an almost-deified personage. An often-psychadelic, often chaotic experience to watch (not unlike the decade itself when the film was produced). Good, but… eeh. I will say this though… it was, in my opinion, Coppola's best work in the last two decades.

It's a masterpiece why, because of its hallucinatory mood, or the chaos it supposedly shows (the only crazy stuff I saw was that big ceremony at the end with the cow being cut open and Martin Sheen fulfilling his assignment with a bit too much gusto)? Nothing of an epic scale happens. I admit Sheen's unfocused narrative is compelling, and Kurtz in principle is an incredible mystery (Marlon Brando didn't do very well, probably because of those rumors about him being so self conscious of his weight), but none of it adds up to anything special. I should have read the book for better results

THE BOMB!!! Currently my favorite movie of all-time, replacing Jaws & Exorcist! Apoc is a work of art. Hypocrisy is the word, and you will never find so many subtle examples as you will in Apoc. It has so much stuff. It is a man's film, but women also enjoy it. It has a shitload list of incredible actors. It features Marlon Brando, although Robert Duvall (as Bill KILGORE) steals the show, in my humble opinion. Martin Sheen, Laurence Fishburn (So young!), Harrison Ford (so young!), Dennis Hopper! Even has "The End" song from The Doors, some dope-smoking (Legalize It!!!) and an acid trip. The movie is an incredible work-up of hypocrisy: "They teach young men to drop fire on people, yet they are not allowed to write 'Fuck' on their aeroplane, because it's obscene!"
