Gladiator is a glossy and overstylized drama starring Russell Crow and Joaquin Phoenix. Russel Crowe plays Maximus the man who is stipped of his title and forced into slavery. Mr. Crowe's performance, as well as the rest of the casts', are completely wooden and there is barely any emotion shown. It's hard to understand how Mr. Crowe won the oscar. Mr. Scott, however shows some of his best direction with all of the glitz and glamour. The film is only exciting when their are fight scenes. The rest of the film seems to be bare and lethally dull. There definetly should have been better actors in this film. The performances are so wooden it is so hard to sit through this movie because it such a borefest. Gladiator could have been something and whoever was in charge of casting should be slapped in the face.

I think this movie might have been awesome but I was too busy roasting a dirty hook nose in my oven to pay much attention. Nah just kidding I love kikes ha ha ha! I'm Jewish too so it's okay to say that shit so fuck you. I take it back this movie sucked more balls than my grandma at Thanksgiving. Russell Crowe is too fat to play a hero he should play jabba the hut because he's so fucking obese!!!!!!!!!!

The visuals are the only thing that stand out. the script is pretty generic and the acting is decent. Joaquin Phoenix does a pretty good job and is probably the most stand out actor of the film. The special effects are done well and the movie is enjoyable to watch because of the action. However, I can't give it a good review simply because of modern technology. This movie is pretty thin and I haven't watched it again and don't plan to.

For some reason these Roman epics seem all to have a long runtime (look at Spartacus). This doesn't detract from the huge entertainment value this movie provides with its epic vision of the Roman Empire and Rome itself during the height of its glory - though signs of decay are starting to show.
Ridley Scott has always been on the cutting edge of filmmaking (Alien, Bladerunner) and though his last few efforts can be seen as disappointing (GI Jane, White Squall) Gladiator returns him on my "movies to watch" list.
One of the attractions of the film is the sheer acting prowess - Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Connie Nielsen provide excellent performances and give the movie incredible depth - at the expense of runtime. All in all though it's worth it.
Brandon compared this movie to Mortal Kombat. I'm frankly ashamed of him for even going there.
Don't miss this movie on the big screen!

Seeing as I saw this one in the theater on shrooms, I think I'm a bit biased. If you can't guess, I thought the visuals were stunning. Very reminicent of sparticus and and old favorite of mine, a low budget flick named "the blood of heros".

My 1st 10.0 ever. I believe this is the best full-bodied film I've ever seen. I was completely drawn into the story, cinematography, and action.
The introduction was amazing.
Fuck anyone who thinks otherwise, they obviously don't know what cinema entertainment is all about.

The opening sequence is breathtaking...but sadly the movie seems to go down hill from here. In fact the Gladiator scenes, gruelling though they are, were a bit of an anti-climax.
But this movie isn't bad...in fact its quite enjoyable. Three hours never went so fast (well almost).
In the end what could of been a masterpiece of a film becomes nothing more than an slash n slice movie with a VERY thin plot.

It's funny how a movie set 2000 years ago can look and feel so sci-fi. I guess that's Ridley Scott and computer graphics for you.
Anyways, this is definitely a movie to be seen on the big screen, and Russell Crowe emerges as a big-time Hollywood star!
My one fingernail-on-the-chalkboard complaint is the kiss that happens with about 20 minutes to go in the film. A bit of a spoiler to the romantic framework of the movie.

I came into the theater with very high expectations. I had read a lot of reviews (which I don't usually do before seeing a movie) and have such devotion to Russell Crowe that I just knew I'd like it and, surprise!, I did. Russell Crowe bias not withstanding, it was just a great movie. Ridley Scott always has such brilliant visuals in his movies (Alien, Blade Runner to name a couple) and here he does it again. The special effects were very well done, with a couple that should have been better. The script was good, not great, but with such amazing actors as Russell, Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, etc... reading the lines, it worked. Fabulous fighting sequences, both in war and in the ring. Violent yet it had an emotional core. And I must mention the soundtrack. Eloquent and moving when needed and forceful and powerful when required. One of the best movies of the year.

One of the best action movies ever with a real spiritual twist to the ending. The movie sets were so real you felt as if you were in olden day Rome, combined with superb acting makes for a completely entertaining movie.

Far too much hype surrounding this film. I was so excited to see it and I really gave it every chance but as it turns out, it gets a failing grade. The plot is a newer version of Ben-Hur but is too choppy and silly. The action scenes look fake considering the technology we have today, and the cinematography of Rome was really nothing special. I was dying to get out at times and at other times it looked promising. Russell Crowe is perfect for the role, but the movie just never took off. Wait for video if you're curious.

I'm not a sort who watches gladiator movies, but I must admit this one was captivating. A general (Russell Crowe)was slated to become emperor when the ruller died, but the ruler's son has other plans. He orders the general and his family killed, but when the general shows up in the gladiator games this popular general becomes a problem for the new emperor.
This film has marvelous special effects. I especially like the time lapse scenes of the earth and sky, that give it the surreal texture.
Be advised, there is graphic violence - (One scene, a man is chopped in half) so it is probably not appropriate for children. It had a plausable storyline, aside from the end where the emperor himself fights in the games.

Gladiator is the film that came closest to making it onto my Top 100 without actually doing so. My #100 at the time was Hoosiers, and Gladiator just didn't strike me hard enough to let it top that. However, it was still an excellent movie. In a film of this magnitude, there are obviously going to exist some historical errors (like Maximus' son yelling, "Il soldati!" at the sight of soldiers, when the Italian language hadn't even derived from Latin yet), but generally, the film moves on pretty seamlessly. It's also true that your bottom begins to feel the length of the film, but the excellent cinematography and acting makes up for it. The only problem I had with the film (other than the minor points above) is Joaquin Phoenix seeming a bit intimidated by all the talent in his midst toward the beginning of the movie-- his lines and action just seemed a bit contrived and robotic to me. Russell Crowe absolutely shines as Maximus as does the rest of the cast. Although not my favorite, Gladiator was arguably the best-made movie of Summer 2000.

People liken this to greatness because it's about war, it's long, and it stars new big boy Russell Crowe. But what about the frustrating editing, which makes you wonder "what was that, hey wait, no, let me just see that for one more - ah, fuck" time and time again. All the war pathos, too, are siphoned from other epic battlefield movies

The special effects greatly contributed to success of the film. Production design, locations and the story was well-timed we had not seen movie with simple but endearing plot in ages! Aussie Russel Crowe has been scoring big lately and he knows how choose his projects...another Mel Gibson in the making.
I adore Connie Nielsen but her as the conniving sister does not fit her beauty. It should deserved at least an Oscar nomination.

I TOTALLY LOVED this movie...though I am giving it a .5 below what it deserves...a 10. That is because the action seens, it could have been move real..They jar and move the camera around way too much. Though that gives you a real aspect on what people went through etc. it kinda detracts from it too. At the end I cryed...I so wished Russel Crow could have lived. I so wanted to give the Cezar (is that with an s? Can't remember actors name...) a piece of my mind and kill him myself at the end when he secretly stabbed Maximus (Russel Crow). This movie gives you a great look at what Rome was like so long ago. It makes you see how preverted we all were (killing for fun, conquring nations just because, and marring sisters, etc.). I think this movie is AWESOME. It was gorey (Which I rather liked, rrrr, I'm like that, action/killing kinda movie person) and I don't recomend it for blood-scared people. Though if you blood-scared people like action and suspence go see it anways! IT'S GREAT!

A good movie with some excellent action scenes and glorious recreations of Rome (taking advantage of computer effects). The acting is good and the moral timely. Entertainers, voyeurism, and pawns - at a moment when America eagerly absorbs "Survivor," "Big Brother," and "The Mole," the questions of morality and the apparent absurdity of our everyday lives are well taken. The epic story, however, has become a cliche and while cliche (in and of itself) is not bad, this movie depends too much on typical Hollywood trappings.
