Outstanding drama with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as jailmates planning and deciding whether to carry out their escapes. While this is certainly an excellent prison movie, the film has far deeper meanings and is one of the best films of the 90's.

The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite film of all time-- a status that it has held since I first saw it a few years ago. It is the gritty story of Andy Dufresne and his struggle to redeem himself from Shawshank Prison against great odds. My love for the story grew even more after I explored "http://welcome.to/shawshank". A beautiful film worth watching, replete with unforgettable images and words. Red's last monologue is a masterpiece. Everyone should definitely see this film.

It was very hard for me to follow the plot. A sure sign of a crappy ripoff movie. Sorry.
This was my original review... that was until I relized I was talking about a completely different movie! When I wrote this review i was thinking of a completly different movie. Sorry!
Anyway, The Shawshank Redemption was probably not one of my favorite movies... but I tolerated it and their were a few (and I say FEW with emphasis) parts that I actually thought were good. But even I have to admit, that the setting, characters, and plot were all truly amazing, and belonged in this amazing movie. So if you are looking for nothing better to do... SEE THIS MOVIE! YOU WILL LOVE IT!!
I will apologize again, to any big fans of The Shawshank Redemption. My first rating was a horrible mistake. I am sorry.

This movie is a great one. The first time I saw it I was expecting a bit more, because of the rave reviews; I was a little disappointed, but as I watched it a second time, I began to realize the brilliance more. This movie is flat-out re-watchable! I don't mind having it on while I do other things. My girlfriend is sick of seeing me play it. I think this movie put Tim Robbins on the map. A near-perfectly crafted drama that deserves 95% of the praise heaped upon it. "The Shawshank Redemption" has that distinction of being considered a classic of American cinema in the relatively short period of time since its initial release. It's well-acted, as can be expected--Morgan Freeman's one of those actors where you can pretty much assume he'll turn in a good performance every time. The twist, the dialogue, the setup--everything about this film screams classic. My small complaint is that it tends to drag a little--"Shawshank" is not a continually fast-paced movie. But if you can deal with the length and with the weighty subject matter, "The Shawshank Redemption," squeezing a 2-1/2 hour movie from a 100-page novella, is a rare cinematic acheivement.

Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are good in this film that is good until the very end where it gets great. Don't rent it because you'll waste your money, because it comes on the Shawshank Redemption channel(TNT) at least 3 times a month.

"The Shawshank Redemption" doesn't hold up as ably on repeated viewings-- it's overlong, and occasionally wrought in an overly melodramatic fashion. Still, it's a fantastic picture at heart-- sure, Morgan Freeman doesn't exactly sound like the most convincing choice to portray an Irish inmate, but his performance is wonderful, and this above-average film becomes just plain great in the last 15 minutes or so. It's still too long, and it doesn't have much of a rewatchability factor, but it's still one of cinema's pure examples of a solid movie.

very good movie i would give it five thumbs up i like red and how they were good friends and in the end when they met on the beach just like he had said they would great movie portrays real prison life i'm guessing because i dont know that for a fact.

I can't help but feel emotional every time I see this film. Both Robbins and Freeman are excellent, and the supporting cast is good enough not to screw anything up, but they aren't spectacular.
One of the few complaints I have about the film is that it does get slow at times, and I find myself becoming a little bored. Another complaint I have is I wish the makers of Shawshank would give credit where credit is due for the amazing amount of scenes and ideas taken from Escape From Alcatraz, starring Clint Eastwood. How can so many critics claim that Instinct is derivative while none of them mention the fact that Shawshank Redemption is one of the most derivative movies of all time? Shawshank is significantly better than Alcatraz, and it does have important emotional elements that Alcatraz is void of; but a theft is a theft, and that won't change unless the makers of Shawshank start giving credit to Alcatraz. Here are some of the things stolen:
The digging tool being kept in a carved out bible and the somewhat funny irony that that entails.
The rapist encountering the star in the showers near the beginning of the film to set up further encounters.
An inmate at mealtime asking the star whether he will be eating something and then pulling out a small animal. I'm sure most Shawshank lovers thought that the whole bird thing was a completely original symbolic idea. Sorry, but even though the symbolism is well taken, it was FAR from original. The whole idea probably started with the mealtime animal scene, as it was obviously a direct steal.
The digging debris being emptied out of the star's pants during strolls.
The star befriending the black guy who can get you anything. True, Red is a much more important character in Shawshank, but considering how much was stolen, this certainly was too.
There are several others that I have forgotten, as I have not seen Escape from Alcatraz in quite awhile. And if Instinct had any cliché’s, Shawshank certainly did, with the evil warden, the evil guard, the religion, the "highly intelligent" star, and the concentration on the "hole", where the star is always sent to burn for a while.
Despite all of this, I really do like Shawshank Redemption and will probably watch it many times in the future, but it absolutely amazes me that I have not seen or heard one single critic mention the robbery here. And as people became critic-following sheep with Instinct, they certainly did with Shawshank.

Well-crafted, but over-praised prison melodrama. If I were a bit more of an ogre, I'd call it "The Shawshank Manipulation." Its status as one of the best films of the decade befuddles me. Sure, the acting is good, and the cinematography is that sepia-toned stuff that everyone likes, but the thematic content scarcely breaches banality.
